You are in a costume shop in Barranquilla, three days before Carnaval. The walls are covered in sequined fabrics, feathered headdresses, and shelves of painted masks. A seamstress holds up two skirts for you to examine. One is long, flowing, and bright yellow with red embroidery. The other is shorter, layered, and made of stiff white cotton with lace trim. She asks: "¿Cuál prefiere? ¿Esta falda amarilla o esa falda blanca?" (Which do you prefer? This yellow skirt or that white skirt?) You point to a third one across the room - a stunning indigo skirt with gold threading. "¿Y aquella falda azul?" you ask. (And that blue skirt over there?) The seamstress smiles: "Ah, aquella es de seda pura. Es la más cara de todas." (That one is pure silk. It is the most expensive of all.)
Three demonstratives in three sentences: esta (this one, near me), esa (that one, near you), aquella (that one, far from both of us). Combined with colors, materials, and adjective agreement - this is the grammar of describing clothing in Spanish.

Spanish has three levels of distance for pointing at things - English only has two (this/that). This three-way system is essential when shopping, describing costumes, or talking about objects in a room.

The rule: The demonstrative must agree in gender AND number with the noun it describes.
In Spanish, color adjectives must agree with the noun in gender and number. Some colors change form, others do not.

Each region of Colombia has distinctive traditional clothing. Let's describe them using demonstratives, colors, and materials.
The Sombrero Vueltiao - Sucre/Córdoba: Este sombrero negro y blanco es el símbolo nacional de Colombia. It is woven from caña flecha (arrow cane) by the Zenú indigenous people. Se hace a mano - se necesitan semanas para tejer uno solo. (It is made by hand - it takes weeks to weave a single one.)
The Ruana - Boyacá/Andes: Esa ruana gris es de lana de oveja. The ruana is a rectangular poncho worn in the cold Andean highlands. Es gruesa y abrigada - perfecta para el clima frío de Boyacá. (It is thick and warm - perfect for Boyacá's cold climate.)
The Pollera Colorá - Caribbean Coast: Aquella falda roja y amarilla es una pollera colorá - el traje típico de la cumbia. The wide, flowing skirt is made of brightly colored cotton and is spun during cumbia dances.
At a Cultural Exhibition in Bogotá
You are at a museum exhibit on Colombian traditional clothing. A guide explains: "Este sombrero vueltiao es de caña flecha - es el más famoso de Colombia. Esa ruana gris es de lana de Boyacá - los campesinos la usan todos los días. Y aquellas faldas de colores brillantes son polleras para bailar cumbia. ¿Ve la diferencia? Esta ropa de tierra fría es oscura y gruesa. Aquella ropa costeña es clara y ligera." Notice the demonstratives: este (near the guide), esa (nearby display), aquellas (far display).
