It is December 16th in a house in the Zona Cafetera. The entire family - abuelos, tíos, primos, vecinos - is gathered around a small altar decorated with figurines of Mary and Joseph. Someone lights a candle. A grandmother begins reading from a small booklet: "En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo..." Everyone responds in unison. This is the Novena de Aguinaldos, nine nights of prayer and celebration leading up to Christmas. But the moment the prayers end, the real action begins: trays of golden buñuelos appear from the kitchen, a pot of warm natilla is set on the table, and someone turns up a vallenato on the speaker. Your host's daughter, a university student named Isabella, leans over and says: "Cuando yo era niña, mi abuela siempre hacía los buñuelos a mano. Ahora los compramos en la panadería." (When I was a child, my grandmother always made the buñuelos by hand. Now we buy them at the bakery.)
Two verb tenses in one breath: era (imperfect - she WAS a child, ongoing past state) and hacía (imperfect - grandmother USED TO make them). Then compramos (present - now we buy them). This is the pretérito/imperfecto contrast - and Colombian Christmas is the perfect story to learn it.
A2-B1 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
You already learned the pretérito in Lesson 1 - completed, finished actions. The imperfecto describes a different kind of past: ongoing states, habitual actions, and background descriptions.
| Pretérito | Imperfecto | |
|---|---|---|
| What it describes | A completed action | An ongoing state or habit |
| Mental image | A photograph - one moment | A video - continuous |
| Time frame | Started and ended | No clear beginning or end |
| Example | Ayer comí buñuelos. (Yesterday I ate buñuelos.) | Siempre comía buñuelos en Navidad. (I always used to eat buñuelos at Christmas.) |
Imperfecto formation - regular verbs:
| Subject | -ar: rezar (to pray) | -er: comer | -ir: vivir |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | rezaba | comía | vivía |
| usted | rezaba | comía | vivía |
| nosotros | rezábamos | comíamos | vivíamos |
| ustedes | rezaban | comían | vivían |
| ellos | rezaban | comían | vivían |
Only 3 verbs are irregular in the imperfecto: ser (era), ir (iba), ver (veía). That is it.
Certain time expressions almost always trigger one tense or the other. Learn these and you will know which tense to use before you even conjugate the verb.
Pretérito triggers (completed actions):
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ayer | yesterday | Ayer hicimos la Novena. |
| el año pasado | last year | El año pasado celebramos en Bogotá. |
| anoche | last night | Anoche comimos natilla. |
| una vez | one time | Una vez probé buñuelos caseros. |
| de repente | suddenly | De repente, se fue la luz. |
Imperfecto triggers (habits/ongoing states):
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| siempre | always | Siempre rezábamos la Novena en familia. |
| todos los años | every year | Todos los años comíamos natilla. |
| cuando era niño/a | when I was a child | Cuando era niño, vivía en Manizales. |
| generalmente | generally | Generalmente, mi abuela cocinaba. |
| en esa época | in that era/time | En esa época, no había internet. |
Each word appears in two sentences - one pretérito (what happened once) and one imperfecto (what used to happen) - so you can feel the difference.
| Vocabulary | Pretérito (one-time event) | Imperfecto (habitual/ongoing) |
|---|---|---|
| la natilla (custard dessert) | Ayer probé la natilla que hizo mi mamá. | Mi abuela siempre hacía la mejor natilla. |
| los buñuelos (cheese fritters) | Compré buñuelos en la panadería. | Comprábamos buñuelos frescos cada mañana en diciembre. |
At B1, you need to combine pretérito and imperfecto in the same narrative. The pattern:
Imperfecto = the background/setting. Pretérito = the specific event that happened.
...viajamos a Cartagena.
Isabella Tells You About Her Childhood Christmases
The Novena runs from December 16 to 24 - nine nights that give it its name (novena = ninth/nine). Each night follows a pattern:
Complete: 'Cuando era niño, mi familia siempre ___ la Novena juntos.' (When I was a child, my family always ___ the Novena together.)
A Colombian Colleague Asks About Your Holiday Traditions
Your colleague Laura asks: "¿Cómo celebraba usted la Navidad cuando era niño/a?" Using the imperfecto for habitual actions and the pretérito for specific events, you respond: "Cuando era niño, mi familia siempre se reunía el 25 de diciembre. Mi mamá cocinaba un pavo enorme. Generalmente, abríamos los regalos por la mañana. Un año, mi hermano rompió su regalo nuevo - ¡mi mamá se enojó mucho!"
Which pair correctly shows imperfecto (habit) vs. pretérito (specific event)?
Daily Actions for This Week
Monday-Tuesday: Conjugate 5 -ar verbs and 5 -er/-ir verbs in the imperfecto for all persons. Write each in a sentence with siempre or todos los años.
Wednesday-Thursday: Write 6 sentences about childhood holiday habits: 3 in imperfecto (Cuando era niño/a, siempre ___) and 3 in pretérito (Un año, ___ or El año pasado, ___).
Friday: Write an 8-sentence narrative about a holiday memory combining both tenses. Start with background (imperfecto), then introduce a specific event (pretérito).
Weekend: Ask a Colombian friend or tutor: "¿Cómo celebraba usted la Navidad cuando era niño/a?" Listen for imperfecto verbs in their answer and write them down.
Fue una noche especial. / Comimos, bailamos y cantamos villancicos.
