The streets of Popayán are silent except for the shuffle of thousands of feet. It is Holy Thursday night, and you are watching a procession that has taken place here every year since 1556. Men in purple robes carry enormous wooden platforms - pasos - bearing life-sized statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary through colonial streets lit only by candlelight. No one speaks. The only sounds are a distant brass band playing a funeral march and the occasional whisper: "Se lleva el paso por las calles del centro." (The paso is carried through the downtown streets.) An elderly woman next to you crosses herself and murmurs: "Se reza el rosario antes de la procesión." (The rosary is prayed before the procession.) A guide explains to a group of tourists: "Se dice que estas procesiones son las más antiguas de América." (It is said that these processions are the oldest in the Americas.)
Three sentences. Three uses of se - but these are not the impersonal se you learned in Lesson 2. These are passive se constructions and impersonal reporting structures. They are how Colombians describe rituals, beliefs, and traditions without naming the actor.
A2-B1 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
In Lesson 2, you learned impersonal se for general customs (se celebra, se come). Now we add the passive se - used when the focus is on what is done TO something, and the actor is unknown or unimportant.
The pattern is the same structure: se + verb (agreeing with the noun)
| Construction | Example | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Passive se | Se lleva el paso por las calles. | The paso IS CARRIED - focus on the paso |
| Passive se | Se encienden velas en la iglesia. | Candles ARE LIT - focus on the candles |
| Passive se | Se reza el rosario a las seis. | The rosary IS PRAYED - focus on the ritual |
This is identical in form to the impersonal se from Lesson 2. The difference is subtle and context-dependent - at B1, you do not need to distinguish them grammatically. What matters is that you can produce and understand the pattern.
Colombian Spanish has a powerful structure for reporting beliefs, rumors, and common knowledge without claiming personal authority:
| Structure | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Se dice que... | It is said that... / They say that... | Se dice que las procesiones de Popayán son las más antiguas de América. |
| Se cree que... | It is believed that... | Se cree que la tradición empezó en 1556. |
| Se sabe que... | It is known that... | Se sabe que miles de personas visitan Popayán en Semana Santa. |
| Se cuenta que... | It is told that... / The story goes that... | Se cuenta que un milagro ocurrió en la iglesia en 1736. |
| Se piensa que... | It is thought that... | Se piensa que Mompox tiene las procesiones más solemnes. |
After these structures, the clause that follows uses the indicative (normal verb forms) - because you are reporting what people say/believe as a fact.
Se dice que... / Se cree que... / Se sabe que... / Se cuenta que...
...las procesiones de Popayán son muy antiguas. ...la Semana Santa es la celebración más importante.
Se dice que las procesiones de Popayán son las más antiguas de toda América Latina.
Each vocabulary word is embedded in a passive se or reporting construction - the way these rituals are actually described.
| Vocabulary | In a Passive/Reporting Construction |
|---|---|
| la procesión (procession) | Se organizan procesiones durante toda la Semana Santa. |
| el paso (float/platform with religious figures) | Se cargan los pasos sobre los hombros de los cargueros. |
| el carguero (person who carries the paso) | Se seleccionan los cargueros meses antes de la Semana Santa. |
| la vela (candle) | Se encienden velas a lo largo de las calles. |
| el rosario (rosary) | Se reza el rosario antes de cada procesión. |
| el incienso (incense) | Se quema incienso durante las ceremonias. |
| el Viernes Santo (Good Friday) | Se dice que el Viernes Santo es el día más solemne. |
| la Cuaresma (Lent) | Se observa la Cuaresma durante 40 días antes de Pascua. |
Passive se constructions are perfect for describing processes step by step - and religious rituals are full of ordered steps.
How a Semana Santa procession is organized:
Notice: every step uses passive se + verb. The time markers (primero, después, luego, al final) from Lesson 1 create the sequence.
A Guide Explains the Mompox Procession
You are in Mompox, a colonial town on the Magdalena River. A local guide explains: "Se dice que las procesiones de Mompox son únicas porque los cargueros caminan hacia atrás - se camina en reversa como señal de respeto. Se encienden antorchas, no velas. Se cree que esta tradición tiene más de 400 años. Se sabe que García Márquez se inspiró en Mompox para sus novelas." Notice how every sentence uses a se construction - passive or reporting.
By now you have learned three uses of se. Here is how they compare:
| Type | Pattern | Example | Lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reflexive se | subject + se + verb | Ella se viste de negro. (She dresses herself in black.) | Previous |
| Impersonal se | se + verb (general custom) | Se celebra la Semana Santa en abril. (Holy Week is celebrated in April.) | Lesson 2 |
| Passive se | se + verb (focus on what is done) | Se cargan los pasos por las calles. (The pasos are carried through the streets.) | This lesson |
| Reporting se | se dice/cree/sabe que + clause | Se dice que la tradición tiene 500 años. (It is said the tradition is 500 years old.) | This lesson |
Identify the Se Type
Read each sentence and identify the se usage:
Which sentence uses a REPORTING 'se' construction?
Complete: '___ que más de 100,000 personas visitan Popayán durante la Semana Santa.' (It is known that...)
