You are in Pereira, looking at a whiteboard in a car rental office. The agent points at the options: "Si alquila por la semana completa, le sale más económico. Pero si quisiera un todoterreno para ir al Eje Cafetero, le recomendaría una camioneta." Two conditional structures in one breath - si alquila (real condition: if you rent) and si quisiera (hypothetical: if you wanted). The difference is not just grammar - it changes whether the agent thinks you are probably going to rent or just considering it. Rental negotiations in Colombia are built on conditional clauses, and mastering them means the difference between paying tourist prices and getting the local deal.
Alquilar en Colombia es negociar - y negociar es dominar las cláusulas condicionales. (Renting in Colombia is negotiating - and negotiating is mastering conditional clauses.)
In this lesson, you will learn conditional clauses for real and hypothetical scenarios, the vocabulary of renting vehicles and equipment, and the negotiation strategies that work in Colombian rental contexts.

Type 1: Real Conditions (likely to happen) Si + present indicative + future / present

Agente: "Buenos días. ¿En qué le puedo colaborar?" → Colaborar = to help/assist - Colombian alternative to ayudar in service contexts.
Tú: "Buenos días. Quisiera alquilar un carro para recorrer el Eje Cafetero. Vamos a estar cinco días." → Quisiera (polite conditional) + vamos a estar (ir a + infinitive for planned duration).
Agente: "Claro. Tenemos un Kia Picanto automático en ochenta mil diarios, o si necesita algo más grande, una Renault Duster en ciento cuarenta mil." → Prices in daily rate (diarios). Colombian rentals typically quote per-day rates.
Tú: "Si alquilara los cinco días, ¿me podría hacer un mejor precio?" → Type 2 conditional - hypothetical to test the negotiation without committing.
Agente: "Si son los cinco días completos, se lo puedo dejar en trescientos cincuenta mil por los cinco días el Picanto. Eso le sale a setenta mil diarios." → Se lo puedo dejar en - the Colombian negotiation phrase from Lesson 1. Le sale a = it works out to.
Tú: "¿Y el seguro está incluido?"
Agente: "El seguro básico sí. Si quisiera el seguro todo riesgo, serían treinta mil adicionales por día." → Si quisiera - hypothetical again. Todo riesgo = comprehensive/full coverage.
Tú: "Perfecto. Si me incluye el seguro todo riesgo en el precio total, cerramos trato." → Si me incluye... cerramos trato - Type 1 conditional for a real, actionable offer. Cerrar trato = close the deal.
The customer shifts from 'Si alquilara los cinco días' (hypothetical) to 'Si me incluye el seguro, cerramos trato' (real). Why does this shift matter?
What does 'cerrar trato' mean?
Bike Rental Shop - Villa de Leyva
Tú: "Buenas. ¿Alquilan bicicletas de montaña?"
Dueño: "Claro que sí. Tenemos de montaña y de ruta. ¿Para cuántas personas?" → De montaña = mountain bikes. De ruta = road bikes.
Tú: "Para dos. Si tuvieran dos de montaña buenas, las llevaríamos por todo el día." → Type 2 conditional - testing availability before committing.
Dueño: "Sí, tengo dos Trek nuevas. Si las lleva por el día completo, se las dejo en cuarenta mil cada una. Le incluyo casco y candado." → Type 1 - real offer. Candado = lock. Se las dejo = I'll leave them (for you) at that price.
Tú: "¿Y si se daña algo en el camino?" → ¿Y si se daña? = And if something breaks? Dañarse = to break/get damaged (very Colombian - used for everything from phones to cars).
Dueño: "Si es daño mecánico normal, yo lo cubro. Si es por negligencia, tocaría que pagara la reparación." → Lo cubro = I cover it. Tocaría que pagara = you would have to pay (conditional tocaría + subjunctive pagara).
Quisiera alquilar... / Me interesaría... - shows interest without commitment.
Si alquilara por [time], ¿qué precio me haría? - explores options.
¿El seguro está incluido? / ¿Qué incluye el precio?
Daily Practice Actions
Monday-Tuesday: Write 5 real conditional sentences about travel: Si llueve, llevaremos paraguas. Si el vuelo se retrasa, tomaremos un taxi.
Wednesday-Thursday: Convert each real conditional into a hypothetical one. Compare the change in meaning: Si lloviera, llevaríamos paraguas. Notice how the hypothetical feels less certain.
Friday: Write a car rental negotiation dialogue. Start with hypothetical conditionals to explore, then shift to real conditionals when you are ready to commit.
Weekend: Research Colombian car rental companies online (Hertz Colombia, Avis, local companies). Compare prices and identify vocabulary from this lesson on their websites.
