It is your fifth day in Cartagena. You wake up with a pounding headache, an upset stomach, and a fever. The street food from last night - those arepas de huevo from the vendor near the muralla - is the likely culprit. You need medicine, maybe a doctor, and you definitely need to communicate your symptoms clearly. You open Google Maps and see "Droguería" on every other block. Good - pharmacies in Colombia are everywhere and pharmacists can recommend medications. But when you walk in, the pharmacist asks: "¿Qué síntomas presenta?" and you freeze. Describing symptoms, understanding medical advice, and navigating emergencies in Spanish requires specific vocabulary AND grammatical structures you have not practiced.
(Health does not wait for you to learn vocabulary.) When you are sick or in danger, you need the words immediately.
In this lesson, you will master medical and emergency vocabulary, the subjunctive for expressing uncertainty about health conditions, and the communication skills to handle everything from a pharmacy visit to a hospital emergency.
B2 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Health situations are inherently uncertain - you do not know what is wrong, you hope it is not serious, you doubt it is contagious. This uncertainty is exactly where Spanish uses the subjunctive.
Triggers of subjunctive in medical contexts:
| Trigger | Example | Why subjunctive? |
|---|---|---|
| Es posible que... | Es posible que sea una infección. | Possibility - not confirmed |
| Es probable que... | Es probable que tenga dengue. | Probability - still uncertain |
| Espero que... | Espero que no sea grave. | Hope - emotional uncertainty |
| Dudo que... | Dudo que necesite cirugía. | Doubt - subjective assessment |
| No creo que... | No creo que sea alergia. | Negated belief - uncertainty |
| Ojalá que... | Ojalá que se mejore pronto. | Wish - desired outcome |
| Before - event hasn't happened |
Colombian pharmacists and doctors use specific language. Here is what you need.
Symptom vocabulary in context:
| Symptom | Spanish | In a Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| fever | fiebre | Creo que tengo fiebre. Me siento caliente. |
| nausea | náuseas | Tengo náuseas y no he podido comer. |
| diarrhea | diarrea | Llevo dos días con diarrea. |
| dizziness | mareo | Me siento mareado/a cuando me levanto. |
Key verb: DOLER (to hurt) - works like GUSTAR:
Me duele la cabeza. (My head hurts - literally: the head hurts to me.) Me duelen las piernas. (My legs hurt - plural subject → duelen.) ¿Le duele aquí? (Does it hurt here? - doctor asking patient.) ¿Desde cuándo le duele? (Since when has it been hurting?)
¿Me podría recomendar algo?" → Llevar + time + con for duration. ¿Me podría recomendar? = conditional for polite request.
Farmaceuta: "¿Ha tenido fiebre?" → Present perfect (ha tenido) - asking about recent experience.
→ Tuve (preterite - specific past event) vs. me siento (present - how you feel now). Me sigue molestando = keeps bothering me.
Sería mejor que fuera - conditional + subjunctive for advice.
Tú: "¿Cada cuánto me tomo la Buscapina?" → ¿Cada cuánto? = How often? Essential medical question.
"Go to (see) a doctor."
What grammar structure is this?
Clínica del Viajero - Bogotá
Doctor: "Buenas tardes. Cuénteme, ¿qué le pasa?" → Cuénteme = Tell me (imperative - inviting you to explain). ¿Qué le pasa? = What's wrong? (standard medical opener).
→ Articulaciones = joints. Cansancio = fatigue. Me preocupa que pueda ser = I'm worried it might be - subjunctive after emotional trigger.
→ Necesito que se haga = I need you to get (yourself) - subjunctive after necessity. Exámenes de sangre = blood tests.
Tú: "¿Dónde me los puedo hacer?" → Double pronoun: me (for me) + los (them, referring to exámenes). Natural B2 question.
→ Baje en ayunas = Go down (imperative) fasting. Espero que salgan = subjunctive after hope.
Why is 'se haga' subjunctive?
Llevo [time] con [symptoms]. - "I have had [symptoms] for [time]."
Tengo fiebre, dolor de [body part], y [additional symptom]. Use me duele for pain in specific areas.
Me preocupa que pueda ser... / Creo que es posible que sea...
Colombia's emergency number is 123 (police, ambulance, fire). Knowing how to communicate in an emergency can save lives.
Emergency phrases - memorize these:
| Situation | What to Say |
|---|---|
| General emergency | ¡Necesito ayuda! Estoy en [location]. |
| Medical emergency | Necesito una ambulancia. Hay una persona inconsciente / herida. |
| Theft | Me robaron. Necesito poner una denuncia. |
| Accident | Hubo un accidente en [location]. Hay heridos. |
| Allergic reaction | Estoy teniendo una reacción alérgica. Soy alérgico/a a [substance]. |
| Lost / disoriented | Estoy perdido/a. No sé dónde estoy. ¿Me puede ayudar? |
Droguerías are everywhere and pharmacists can help. Unlike some countries, Colombian pharmacists can recommend medications for common ailments without a prescription. Many medications that require prescriptions elsewhere are available over the counter. "¿Me recomienda algo para el dolor de cabeza?" is a perfectly normal question.
Consultation fees are affordable. A private doctor visit (consulta particular) costs approximately 80,000-150,000 COP ($20-40 USD). Many clinics accept walk-ins. "¿Atienden sin cita?" = Do you see patients without an appointment?
Travel insurance vocabulary: seguro de viaje (travel insurance), póliza (policy), cobertura (coverage), autorización (authorization). "Tengo seguro de viaje. ¿Necesito una autorización previa?"
Calling Your Insurance Company from Colombia
→ Formal register for insurance calls. Quisiera saber si = conditional for polite inquiry. Cubre = covers.
→ Necesito que me dé = subjunctive after necessity. Le autorizo = I authorize (for) you.
