You have just landed in Medellín. Your phone shows three WhatsApp messages - one from a hotel receptionist asking "¿A qué hora llegaría?" (What time would you arrive?), one from a hostel in the Poblado neighborhood saying "Nos quedan dos camas en dormitorio mixto" (We have two beds left in a mixed dorm), and one from an Airbnb host writing "¿Le gustaría que le dejara las llaves con el portero?" (Would you like me to leave the keys with the doorman?). Each message uses a different register, a different level of formality, and a different set of grammatical structures. If you can only say "Quiero una habitación" - you are going to struggle.

In this lesson, you will master the conditional tense for polite requests, the subjunctive in request clauses, and the specialized vocabulary of Colombian accommodation - from five-star hotels in Cartagena to fincas in the Eje Cafetero.

At B2, you move beyond "Quiero..." (I want) to the conditional - the grammatical tool that transforms demands into courteous requests. In Colombian Spanish, this is not optional: using the conditional signals education, respect, and social awareness.
Formation: Take the infinitive and add conditional endings: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -ían.

Key irregulars: querer → querría (but Colombians overwhelmingly use quisiera - the imperfect subjunctive form functioning as a polite conditional). Poder → podría. Tener → tendría. Haber → habría.
Transforming demands into requests:

At B2, you combine the conditional with subjunctive clauses to make complex, polished requests. The pattern: main verb (conditional) + que + subjunctive.
Pattern: Quisiera que + [subjunctive]

The subjunctive appears because you are expressing a wish or request about someone else's action - which is inherently uncertain.
Quisiera... / Me gustaría... / ¿Sería posible...? / ¿Podría...?
Quisiera reservar... / Me gustaría ver... / ¿Podría pagar...?
Quisiera que me despertaran... / ¿Sería posible que me cambiaran...?
Colombian accommodation has its own vocabulary. A finca is not a farm - it is a country house you rent for weekends. A portero is not just a doorman - he is your Airbnb access point.

Phone Call to Hotel Casa del Reloj - Cartagena
Recepcionista: "Hotel Casa del Reloj, buenas tardes, ¿en qué le puedo servir?" → Note: ¿En qué le puedo servir? is more formal than ¿En qué le puedo ayudar? - typical of upscale hotels.
Tú: "Buenas tardes. Quisiera saber si tendría disponibilidad para una habitación doble del 15 al 18 de marzo." → Double conditional: quisiera saber (I would like to know) + si tendría (if you would have). Maximum politeness.
Recepcionista: "Déjeme revisar... Sí, nos queda una doble superior con vista al mar y una estándar con vista al patio interior." → Nos queda = we have left (literally: there remains to us). Vista al mar = sea view. Patio interior = interior courtyard.
Tú: "¿Cuánto sería la tarifa por noche para la de vista al mar?" → ¿Cuánto sería? (conditional) instead of ¿Cuánto es? - more courteous when negotiating price.
Recepcionista: "La superior con vista al mar estaría en trescientos ochenta mil pesos la noche, con desayuno incluido." → Estaría en = would be at (price). Note the conditional - even the receptionist uses it for quoting prices politely.
Tú: "Perfecto. ¿Sería posible que me la reservaran con check-in temprano? Llegaríamos como a las diez de la mañana." → ¿Sería posible que me la reservaran? = conditional + subjunctive. Llegaríamos = we would arrive. Como a las diez = around ten - como softens the time.
In the hotel dialogue, why does the guest say 'Quisiera saber si tendría disponibilidad' instead of simply '¿Tiene disponibilidad?'
WhatsApp Exchange with Airbnb Host - Medellín
Tú: "Hola, buenas noches. Vi su apartamento en Airbnb y me interesó mucho. Quisiera saber si estaría disponible del 5 al 12 de abril." → Me interesó (preterite - completed interest). Si estaría disponible - conditional for politeness even in text.
Anfitrión: "¡Hola! Sí, esas fechas están libres. Son $180.000 por noche. El apartamento tiene todo: cocina, wifi, lavadora, y el portero le entrega las llaves." → Están libres = are free/available. Note the host switches to present tense - less formal, more personal. El portero le entrega = the doorman gives you (the keys).
Tú: "Muchas gracias. Tendría dos preguntas: ¿sería posible que me hiciera un descuento por la semana completa? Y quisiera que el check-in fuera después de las 4, si no es mucha molestia." → Tendría dos preguntas - conditional frames your questions as tentative. Que me hiciera un descuento - subjunctive after sería posible que. Que el check-in fuera - subjunctive after quisiera que.
Anfitrión: "Claro, por ser semana completa se lo puedo dejar en $150.000 la noche. Y el check-in sin problema a las 4." → Se lo puedo dejar en = I can leave it at (negotiated price). This is how Colombians confirm a discount.
The guest writes: 'Quisiera que el check-in fuera después de las 4.' Why is 'fuera' in the subjunctive?
Walk-in at Hostel Pachamama - Santa Marta
Tú: "Buenas, ¿les quedan camas disponibles para esta noche?" → Informal register - buenas instead of buenas tardes. ¿Les quedan? = Do you have left? - natural for walk-ins.
Recepcionista: "¡Ey, claro! Nos queda una en dormitorio mixto de seis y una en el privado doble. El dormitorio está en cuarenta mil y el privado en ciento veinte." → Hostel register - relaxed, direct. Prices in thousands of pesos. El dormitorio está en = the dorm is at (price).
Tú: "Me quedo con la del dormitorio. ¿Incluye desayuno?" → Me quedo con = I will take. Direct but friendly for hostel context.
Recepcionista: "Sí, el desayuno va de 7 a 9. ¿Necesitaría toalla o ya trae?" → Va de 7 a 9 = goes from 7 to 9. Even the hostel worker uses conditional: ¿Necesitaría? - Colombian courtesy is consistent across registers.
At a hostel, you say 'Me quedo con la del dormitorio.' What register is this?
Daily Practice Actions
Monday-Tuesday: Write 5 polite hotel requests using conditional: Quisiera..., ¿Tendría...?, ¿Podría...?, Me gustaría..., ¿Sería posible...?
Wednesday-Thursday: Transform each request into a subjunctive clause. Change Quisiera reservar to Quisiera que me reservaran. Practice the same-subject/different-subject distinction.
Friday: Write a WhatsApp message to a fictional Airbnb host in Cartagena. Ask about availability, negotiate a price, and request a late check-in. Use at least 3 conditional forms and 1 subjunctive clause.
Weekend: Browse real Colombian accommodation on Booking.com or Airbnb. Read the Spanish descriptions and identify conditional/subjunctive forms in the reviews and host responses.
