You are sitting in a motorized canoe on the Amazon River near Leticia, Colombia's southernmost city. The jungle rises on both sides - a wall of green so dense you cannot see more than a meter into it. Your guide points ahead and says: "Manana vamos a visitar una comunidad indigena. Vamos a aprender sobre sus tradiciones." (Tomorrow we are going to visit an indigenous community. We are going to learn about their traditions.) Then he adds, looking at the sky: "Llovera esta tarde. Llevaremos impermeables." (It will rain this afternoon. We will bring rain jackets.) You just heard two different ways to talk about the future in Spanish - and both are essential for planning anything in Colombia's vast frontier regions.
In this lesson, you will learn two future tenses - ir + a + infinitive (near future) and the simple future (-e, -as, -a, -emos, -an) - by planning travel through Colombia's three frontier regions: the Amazon, the Pacific coast, and the Llanos.

Spanish has two common future structures. Both mean "will," but they feel different - like the difference between "I'm going to eat" and "I shall eat" in English.
Near Future: Ir + a + infinitive (going to)

The Colombian Amazon covers a third of the country's territory but holds less than 1% of its population. Getting there requires planning - and planning requires the future tense.

Planning an Amazon Trip
A travel agent in Bogota says: "Para el viaje al Amazonas, primero van a volar a Leticia. El vuelo va a durar unas tres horas. Cuando lleguen, un guia los va a llevar a su hotel. Al dia siguiente, van a navegar por el rio Amazonas. Van a visitar comunidades indigenas y van a aprender sobre plantas medicinales. Si quieren, van a poder caminar por la selva con un guia local." Every plan uses ir + a + infinitive. Count them - there are 7 future statements.
The Pacific coast is wild, rainy, and unpredictable. Weather predictions and warnings naturally use the simple future tense.

A Guide Describes the Pacific Trip
A guide in Nuqui tells you: "Esta semana sera especial. Manana veremos ballenas jorobadas - estamos en temporada. El miercoles visitaremos una comunidad afro donde escucharan currulao, la musica tradicional del Pacifico. El jueves haremos una caminata por la selva. Llovera, pero eso es normal aqui - llueve casi todos los dias. El viernes tendran tiempo libre para nadar o descansar." Every prediction and plan uses the simple future: sera, veremos, visitaremos, escucharan, haremos, llovera, tendran.
Complete: 'Las ballenas jorobadas ___ a la costa Pacifica entre julio y noviembre.'
The Llanos Orientales (Eastern Plains) stretch across four departments - Meta, Arauca, Casanare, and Vichada. Let's use BOTH future forms to plan a trip there.

Three Friends, Three Frontiers
Three friends plan their vacations. Maria: "Yo voy a ir al Amazonas. Voy a navegar por el rio y voy a conocer comunidades indigenas. Sera una experiencia unica." Juan: "Yo ire al Pacifico. Quiero ver las ballenas. Sera temporada en agosto." Sofia: "Y yo voy a viajar a los Llanos. Voy a montar a caballo y voy a probar la mamona. ¡Sera delicioso!" Notice: Maria and Sofia use mostly ir + a (planned trips), Juan uses the simple future (ire) for a more distant plan. All three use sera for predictions.
A guide says: 'Manana ___ temprano porque el rio ___ crecido.' (salir, estar - which future forms?)
Daily Actions for This Week
Monday-Tuesday: Write 8 sentences about your plans for next week using ir + a + infinitive. Then rewrite 4 of them using the simple future. Compare how they feel.
Wednesday-Thursday: Write a 6-sentence travel itinerary for one of Colombia's frontier regions. Use ir + a for planned activities and the simple future for predictions about weather or experiences.
Friday: Write 5 sentences using irregular future verbs: tener (tendre), poder (podre), hacer (hare), salir (saldre), haber (habra). Each should relate to travel.
Weekend: Record a 1-minute audio describing your next vacation in Spanish using both future forms. Listen back and check: are you using ir + a for plans and the simple future for predictions?
