You step off the plane at Jose Maria Cordova airport and the first thing you notice is the temperature - warm, soft, perfect. A taxi driver greets you: "¿Para donde va, mi amor?" Everything in Medellin comes with a term of endearment. Mi amor, mi vida, mijo, mija - even from strangers. The city sits in a narrow valley called the Valle de Aburra, surrounded by green mountains on every side. As the taxi descends toward the city, you see cable cars gliding above brick neighborhoods climbing the hillsides. The driver says: "Medellin es la ciudad mas innovadora de Colombia. Antes era peligrosa. Ahora es otra cosa." (Medellin is the most innovative city in Colombia. Before it was dangerous. Now it is something else.)
In this lesson, you will review adjective agreement - gender and number - by describing cities, landscapes, and the paisa people of Antioquia. Every adjective you use must match the noun it modifies, and paisas will notice if it does not.
A2-B1 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
In English, adjectives never change: "a tall mountain," "tall mountains," "a tall city." In Spanish, adjectives MUST match the noun in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural). This is not optional - it is the difference between sounding like a learner and sounding competent.
The Four Forms:
| Singular | Plural | |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | innovador | innovadores |
| Feminine | innovadora | innovadoras |
Applied to Medellin vocabulary:
| Noun | Correct Adjective | Full Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| el valle (m. sing.) | hermoso | el valle hermoso (the beautiful valley) |
| la ciudad (f. sing.) | innovadora | la ciudad innovadora (the innovative city) |
| los barrios (m. pl.) | coloridos | los barrios coloridos (the colorful neighborhoods) |
| las montanas (f. pl.) | verdes | las montanas verdes (the green mountains) |
| el clima (m. sing.) | perfecto | el clima perfecto (the perfect climate) |
| la gente (f. sing.) | amable | la gente amable (the kind people) |
Adjectives ending in -e or consonant: These do NOT change for gender, only for number.
Complete: 'Las comunas de Medellin son ___.' (colorful, f. plural)
Instead of memorizing adjective rules in isolation, let's apply them immediately to describing Medellin and Antioquia.
The City:
The People:
The Landscape:
La bandeja paisa - feminine singular
grande → grande (no change for -e endings), tipica → tipica (feminine singular), deliciosa → deliciosa (feminine singular)
La bandeja paisa es una comida tipica, grande y deliciosa.
The paisa identity is central to Antioquia. Let's learn cultural vocabulary through adjective-rich descriptions.
| Cultural Term | Description with Adjectives |
|---|---|
| paisa | Las personas paisas son emprendedoras y trabajadoras. Son conocidas por su acento melodico. |
| pujanza (drive/hustle) | La pujanza paisa es legendaria. Es una energia imparable. |
| bandeja paisa | Es un plato abundante y contundente. Tiene frijoles rojos, arroz blanco, carne molida, chicharron crujiente, platano maduro, huevo frito y aguacate. |
| silletero | Los silleteros son campesinos fuertes que cargan silletas enormes llenas de flores frescas durante la Feria de las Flores. |
| finca | Las fincas antioquenas son casas campestres grandes con corredores amplios y jardines tropicales. |
A Paisa Describes Their City
A Medellin native tells you: "Medellin es una ciudad muy especial. El clima es perfecto - ni frio ni caliente. La gente es amable y trabajadora. Hay barrios muy bonitos como El Poblado y Laureles. Las montanas verdes rodean toda la ciudad. La comida es deliciosa y abundante - la bandeja paisa es enorme. Y el metro es limpio y moderno." Count the adjectives: especial, perfecto, frio, caliente, amable, trabajadora, bonitos, verdes, deliciosa, abundante, enorme, limpio, moderno. Every one agrees with its noun.
At B1, you need superlatives to compare and rank. The structure is simple but the adjective MUST still agree.
Pattern: el/la/los/las + noun + mas + adjective + de + group
| Superlative | Example |
|---|---|
| the most + adjective | Medellin es la ciudad mas innovadora de Colombia. |
| the least + adjective | El Amazonas es la region menos poblada del pais. |
| the tallest | El edificio mas alto de Medellin esta en El Poblado. |
| the best (irregular) | El mejor clima de Colombia esta en Medellin. (mejor = better/best, irregular) |
| the worst (irregular) | El peor trafico esta en Bogota. (peor = worse/worst, irregular) |
Note: Mejor and peor do NOT change for gender: el mejor clima, la mejor ciudad, los mejores restaurantes, las mejores fincas.
Complete: 'La Feria de las Flores es la fiesta ___ de Medellin.'
Paisas have one of the most recognizable accents in Colombia. Understanding it helps your listening comprehension.
Key Features:
| Paisa Expression | Standard Spanish | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ¿Que mas, pues? | ¿Como esta? | How are you? / What's up? |
| ¡Hagale! | ¡Adelante! | Go for it! / Do it! |
| Parce / Parcero | Amigo | Friend / buddy |
| Berraco/berraca | Impresionante / dificil | Amazing / tough (context-dependent) |
| ¡Que chimba! | ¡Que genial! | How awesome! (very informal) |
