The heat hits you the moment you step outside the airport in Cartagena. It is not just warm - it is a wall of humidity that wraps around your skin and refuses to let go. A taxi driver leans out of his window and calls: "¿Para donde va, hermano?" You notice immediately: the Spanish here sounds different. Letters disappear - "para'o" instead of parado, "vamo'" instead of vamos. Everything moves at a different rhythm. A woman selling mangoes on the street corner shouts: "¡Mango biche con sal y limon! ¡A do' mil!" (Green mango with salt and lime! For two thousand!) You have arrived at the Colombian Caribbean - where the pace is slower, the flavors are stronger, and the verbs are just as irregular.
In this lesson, you will learn the present tense of key irregular verbs - tener, hacer, poder, querer - by using them in the context of Caribbean coastal life.
A2-B1 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
These four verbs are irregular in the present tense - they do NOT follow regular patterns. But they are among the most used verbs in Spanish, and you cannot survive a day on the Caribbean coast without them.
| tener (to have) | hacer (to do/make) | poder (to be able) | querer (to want) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| yo | tengo | hago | puedo | quiero |
| usted | tiene | hace | puede | quiere |
| el/ella | tiene | hace | puede | quiere |
| nosotros | tenemos | hacemos | podemos | queremos |
| ustedes | tienen | hacen | pueden | quieren |
| ellos | tienen | hacen | pueden | quieren |
Pattern Insight: Tener and querer have an e → ie stem change (tengo is irregular in yo only, but tiene/quiere show the change). Poder has o → ue. Hacer is irregular only in yo: hago.
Complete: 'Los costenos ___ mucho calor todo el ano.'
In English you say "I am hot." In Spanish you say "Tengo calor" - literally "I have heat." This tener + noun pattern is essential and comes up constantly on the Caribbean coast.
| Expression | Literal | Real Meaning | Coast Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| tener calor | to have heat | to be hot | En Cartagena siempre tengo calor. |
| tener hambre | to have hunger | to be hungry | Despues de caminar por las murallas, tenemos hambre. |
| tener sed | to have thirst | to be thirsty | Con este calor, usted tiene sed todo el dia. |
| tener ganas de + inf. | to have desire of | to feel like (doing) | Tengo ganas de nadar en el mar. |
| tener suerte | to have luck | to be lucky | Tenemos suerte - hay brisa hoy. |
| tener cuidado | to have care | to be careful | Hay que tener cuidado con el sol. |
tener calor, tener hambre, tener sed, tener ganas de, tener cuidado
yo = tengo, usted = tiene, nosotros = tenemos, ellos = tienen
Tengo mucho calor en Cartagena. / Tenemos hambre despues de la playa. / Tiene que tener cuidado con el sol.
Hacer (to do/make) is critical for two contexts on the coast: weather expressions and describing activities.
Weather with hacer:
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Hace calor. | It is hot. | En Barranquilla siempre hace calor. |
| Hace sol. | It is sunny. | Hace sol todo el dia en la costa. |
| Hace viento. | It is windy. | Hoy hace viento - perfecto para la playa. |
| Hace buen tiempo. | The weather is good. | En Santa Marta casi siempre hace buen tiempo. |
Activities with hacer:
| Expression | Meaning | Coast Context |
|---|---|---|
| hacer un tour | to take a tour | Quiero hacer un tour por Cartagena. |
| hacer snorkel | to go snorkeling | Podemos hacer snorkel en las Islas del Rosario. |
| hacer una fiesta | to throw a party | Los costenos hacen fiestas increibles. |
| ¿Que hacemos hoy? | What do we do today? | ¿Que hacemos hoy? ¿Playa o ciudad? |
Planning a Day in Cartagena
You and a friend are at your hotel in Cartagena. Your friend says: "Hace mucho calor hoy. ¿Que hacemos?" You respond: "Podemos hacer un tour por la ciudad amurallada en la manana, cuando no hace tanto calor. Despues tengo ganas de ir a las Islas del Rosario. ¿Quiere hacer snorkel?" Your friend says: "Si, quiero. Pero primero tengo hambre. ¿Hay un buen restaurante cerca?" You say: "Si, hay uno que tiene pescado frito con patacones. ¡Es el mejor!"
Poder + infinitive = "can / to be able to." On the coast, you use it constantly to talk about possibilities and ask permission.
| Structure | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| poder + infinitive | Podemos visitar Cartagena. | We can visit Cartagena. |
| ¿Puede + infinitive? | ¿Puede repetir, por favor? | Can you repeat, please? |
| no poder + infinitive | No puedo nadar aqui - hay corrientes fuertes. | I can't swim here - there are strong currents. |
| se puede + infinitive | ¿Se puede entrar a la muralla? | Can one enter the wall? / Is it allowed? |
Key distinction: ¿Puede...? (usted) asks a specific person. ¿Se puede...? is impersonal - asking about rules or general permission.
Querer + infinitive expresses what you WANT to do. Combined with coastal vocabulary, it unlocks ordering food, planning trips, and expressing preferences.
| Structure | Example |
|---|---|
| quiero + infinitive | Quiero probar la arepa de huevo. (I want to try the egg arepa.) |
| ¿Quiere + infinitive? | ¿Quiere ir a la playa? (Do you want to go to the beach?) |
| queremos + infinitive | Queremos conocer Santa Marta. (We want to visit Santa Marta.) |
| no quiero + infinitive | No quiero salir - hace demasiado calor. (I don't want to go out - it's too hot.) |
Caribbean Food Vocabulary with querer:
Ordering at a Beach Restaurant
You are at a restaurant in Playa Blanca. The waiter asks: "¿Que quieren pedir?" You say: "Yo quiero el pescado frito con patacones y arroz con coco." Your friend says: "¿Puede traer una limonada de coco, por favor?" The waiter responds: "¿Quieren algo mas?" You ask: "¿Tienen arepa de huevo?" He says: "Si, tenemos. ¿Cuantas quiere?" You respond: "Dos, por favor."
A waiter asks '¿Que quieren pedir?' You want fried fish. Which response is correct?
Complete: 'En la costa ___ mucho calor, pero la gente ___ celebrar todo el ano.'
