You are looking at a map of Colombia for the first time and something does not add up. This country is roughly the size of France and Spain combined, yet it contains Caribbean beaches, Andean peaks above 5,000 meters, Amazon rainforest, vast cattle plains, and one of the rainiest places on Earth. A Colombian friend sees your confusion and says: "Colombia no es un solo pais. Son seis paises en uno." (Colombia is not one country. It is six countries in one.) She is not exaggerating.
In this lesson, you will learn to describe Colombia's six natural regions - and the grammar that makes description possible in Spanish. Specifically, you will master the difference between ser and estar when talking about places: when a city is something (identity) versus when it is somewhere (location).
A2-B1 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
This is the most important grammar distinction at A2-B1. Both ser and estar translate to English "is/are," but they are NOT interchangeable. When describing Colombia's regions, you need both - and choosing the wrong one changes your meaning entirely.
SER - Identity, characteristics, what something IS:
| Subject | Ser Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Colombia | es | Colombia es un pais megadiverso. (Colombia is a megadiverse country.) |
| Los Andes | son | Los Andes son montanas muy altas. (The Andes are very tall mountains.) |
| La region Caribe | es | La region Caribe es caliente y humeda. (The Caribbean region is hot and humid.) |
ESTAR - Location, position, temporary states:
| Subject | Estar Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Bogota | esta | Bogota esta en la region Andina. (Bogota is in the Andean region.) |
| Las playas | estan | Las playas estan en la costa norte. (The beaches are on the north coast.) |
| El Amazonas | esta | El Amazonas esta en el sur del pais. (The Amazon is in the south of the country.) |
The Rule: If you can replace "is" with "is located" - use estar. If you can replace "is" with "is defined as / is characterized by" - use ser.
Complete: 'Bogota ___ en los Andes a 2,640 metros de altura.'
Colombia's six natural regions are: la region Andina, la region Caribe, la region Pacifica, la region Amazonica, la Orinoquia (los Llanos), and la region Insular. Instead of just listing them, let's practice building sentences that use ser and estar correctly.
La region Andina es montanosa y fria. (The Andean region is mountainous and cold.) Pattern: [Region] + es/son + [characteristic adjective]
La region Andina esta en el centro del pais. (The Andean region is in the center of the country.) Pattern: [Region] + esta/estan + en + [location]
La region Andina es montanosa y esta en el centro de Colombia. - One sentence, both verbs, complete description.
| Region | SER (what it is) | ESTAR (where it is) |
|---|---|---|
| Region Andina | Es montanosa y fria. | Esta en el centro del pais. |
| Region Caribe | Es caliente y tropical. | Esta en el norte, en la costa. |
| Region Pacifica | Es lluviosa y selvativa. | Esta en el occidente, junto al oceano. |
| Region Amazonica | Es inmensa y biodiversa. | Esta en el sur del pais. |
| Orinoquia (Llanos) | Es plana y ganadera. | Esta en el oriente de Colombia. |
| Region Insular | Es pequena y caribena. | Esta en el mar Caribe y el Pacifico. |
When you describe regions, your adjectives MUST agree in gender and number with the noun they modify. This is review from A2, but applied now to geography vocabulary.
| Noun (singular) | Adjective | Noun (plural) | Adjective |
|---|---|---|---|
| el valle (m.) | fertil | los valles | fertiles |
| la montana (f.) | alta | las montanas | altas |
| el rio (m.) | caudaloso (mighty) | los rios | caudalosos |
| la selva (f.) | densa | las selvas | densas |
| el llano (m.) | extenso | los llanos | extensos |
| la isla (f.) | pequena | las islas | pequenas |
Pattern in a full sentence: Los rios amazónicos son caudalosos y estan rodeados de selva densa. (The Amazonian rivers are mighty and are surrounded by dense jungle.)
Notice: caudalosos matches rios (masculine plural), and densa matches selva (feminine singular).
Select the correct sentence: 'Las playas de la costa Caribe ___.'
Now let's learn the key geography vocabulary - but always inside usable sentences, never as isolated words.
La Region Andina (The Andean Region):
La Region Caribe (The Caribbean Region):
La Orinoquia / Los Llanos (The Plains):
Describing Colombia to a New Friend
A Mexican friend asks you about Colombia. You respond: "Colombia es un pais muy diverso. Tiene seis regiones naturales. La region Andina esta en el centro y es montanosa. La costa Caribe esta en el norte y es caliente. El Amazonas esta en el sur y es selvativo. Los Llanos estan en el oriente y son planos." Your friend responds: "¡Increible! ¿Y cual region es la mas bonita?" You say: "Todas son bonitas, pero cada una es diferente."
At B1, you need to combine ser, estar, and hay in a single paragraph. Let's practice with a model description and then you build your own.
Model: La region Pacifica es una de las zonas mas lluviosas del mundo. Esta en el occidente de Colombia, entre la cordillera Occidental y el oceano Pacifico. Hay selvas tropicales densas y rios caudalosos. Las comunidades afrocolombianas son una parte fundamental de esta region. El puerto de Buenaventura esta en la costa y es el mas importante del pais.
Grammar analysis:
A Tour Guide Describes the Amazon
A tour guide in Leticia says: "Bienvenidos a la Amazonia colombiana. Esta region esta en el extremo sur del pais. Es la region mas grande de Colombia pero es la menos poblada. Aqui hay comunidades indigenas que viven en armonía con la selva. El rio Amazonas esta muy cerca - es el rio mas caudaloso del mundo. La biodiversidad de esta zona es impresionante." Notice how the guide switches between ser, estar, and hay naturally. Each one has a specific job.
'La Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta ___ la montana costera mas alta del mundo.'
Daily Actions for This Week
Monday-Tuesday: Write two sentences for each of Colombia's six regions - one with ser (characteristic) and one with estar (location). You should have 12 sentences total.
Wednesday-Thursday: Practice hay sentences. Write 6 sentences starting with "En la region ___ hay..." and include a geography noun with a correctly agreeing adjective.
Friday: Combine all three. Write a full paragraph (5-6 sentences) describing one region, using ser, estar, and hay at least once each.
Weekend: Find a map of Colombia online. Point to each region and describe it aloud in Spanish without looking at notes. Record yourself and listen back - did you use ser for characteristics and estar for locations?
