You are at a dinner table in a Colombian home. Someone puts on music and immediately the conversation shifts. "A mí me encanta esa canción," says the mother. "A mí no me gusta — prefiero el vallenato," says the father. "Yo creo que el reggaetón es mejor," says the teenager. "A mí me parece que toda la música colombiana es buena," says the grandmother, settling the argument with a smile. Hablar de música en Colombia es hablar de identidad — y para hacerlo, necesita saber expresar opiniones y preferencias. (Talking about music in Colombia is talking about identity — and to do it, you need to know how to express opinions and preferences.)
In this lesson, you will master the gustar pattern and learn four structures for expressing opinions. These are among the most socially useful grammar structures in Spanish — you will use them daily.
A2-B1 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Gustar does NOT work like English "to like." Understanding its actual structure is one of the most important breakthroughs at A2.
In English: I like salsa. (I = subject, like = verb, salsa = object) In Spanish: Me gusta la salsa. (Salsa = subject, pleases/delights = verb, me = indirect object)
Literally: "Salsa pleases to me." The thing you like is the SUBJECT. You are the recipient.
The pattern: Indirect object pronoun + gusta/gustan + the thing liked
| Person | Pronoun | Singular thing | Plural things |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | me | Me gusta la salsa. | Me gustan los tambores. |
| usted | le | ¿Le gusta la cumbia? | ¿Le gustan las gaitas? |
| él / ella | le | Le gusta el vallenato. | Le gustan las parrandas. |
| nosotros | nos | Nos gusta el reggaetón. | Nos gustan los conciertos. |
| ustedes / ellos | les | Les gusta la champeta. | Les gustan las canciones románticas. |
Critical rule: The verb agrees with THE THING LIKED, not with the person.
Several important verbs follow the exact same pattern:
| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| encantar | to love/delight | Me encanta la cumbia. (I love cumbia.) |
| fascinar | to fascinate | Me fascina el acordeón. (The accordion fascinates me.) |
| interesar | to interest | Me interesa la historia de la salsa. (The history of salsa interests me.) |
| molestar | to bother | Me molesta la música muy alta. (Very loud music bothers me.) |
| importar | to matter | No me importa el género — me gusta toda la música. (The genre doesn't matter to me.) |
| parecer | to seem | Me parece interesante. (It seems interesting to me.) |
All follow the same pattern: pronoun + third-person verb + subject.
Which sentence correctly says 'We love Colombian songs'?
Two structures for preferences:
Structure 1: Preferir (to prefer) — stem-changing verb (e → ie)
| Subject | Conjugation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | prefiero | Prefiero la salsa. |
| usted | prefiere | ¿Usted prefiere el vallenato o la cumbia? |
| nosotros | preferimos | Preferimos la música en vivo. |
| ellos | prefieren | Ellos prefieren el reggaetón. |
Structure 2: Me gusta más...que (I like...more than)
This combines the gustar pattern with the comparative from Lesson 4:
Choosing Music at a Party
Your host asks: "¿Qué música le gusta?
| Structure | Formality | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Creo que... (I think that...) | Neutral | Creo que la cumbia es el género más interesante. |
| Me parece que... (It seems to me that...) | Neutral-Formal | Me parece que el vallenato tiene las mejores letras. |
| Para mí,... (For me,...) | Informal | Para mí, la salsa es la mejor música para bailar. |
| En mi opinión,... (In my opinion,...) | Formal | En mi opinión, Colombia tiene la música más diversa de América Latina. |
After creo que and me parece que, use the indicative (normal verb forms) at A2 level:
A Music Discussion Among Friends
Three friends discuss music. Andrés: "Para mí, el vallenato es la mejor música de Colombia. Las letras cuentan historias reales." Lina: "No estoy de acuerdo. Creo que la salsa es más emocionante. Me encanta bailar." Carlos: "Me parece que los dos tienen razón. Pero en mi opinión, lo mejor de Colombia es que hay música para todo." Structures in action: para mí + superlative, no estoy de acuerdo (I disagree), creo que + opinion, me parece que + balanced view, en mi opinión + conclusion.
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Estoy de acuerdo. | I agree. | —La salsa es la mejor. —Estoy de acuerdo. |
| Tiene razón. | You are right. | —El vallenato tiene buenas letras. —Tiene razón. |
| A mí también. | Me too. (with gustar/encantar) | —Me encanta la cumbia. —A mí también. |
| A mí tampoco. | Me neither. (with negative gustar) | —No me gusta esa canción. —A mí tampoco. |
| No estoy de acuerdo. | I disagree. | —El reggaetón es malo. —No estoy de acuerdo. |
| Sí, pero... | Yes, but... | Sí, pero me gusta más la cumbia. |
| Pues, yo creo que... | Well, I think... | Pues, yo creo que depende del día. |
Important: A mí también vs. Yo también
Someone says 'Me encanta el vallenato.' You agree. What do you say?
A Colombian Asks Your Music Opinion
At a gathering, someone asks: "¿Qué le parece la música colombiana?" This is your chance to use everything from this lesson. A strong answer might be: "Me encanta. Creo que Colombia tiene la música más diversa de América Latina. Me gusta mucho la cumbia — me fascina su historia. Pero me gusta más la salsa que el reggaetón para bailar. Para mí, lo mejor es que cada región tiene su propio estilo." Count the structures: me encanta (gustar pattern), creo que (opinion), me gusta mucho (gustar + intensifier), me fascina (gustar-type verb), me gusta más...que (preference comparison), para mí (opinion marker).
Daily Actions for This Week
Monday-Tuesday: Write 6 sentences using gustar/encantar with different subjects: Me gusta la salsa. Nos encantan los conciertos. Les gustan las canciones románticas. Check: does the verb match the thing liked?
Wednesday-Thursday: Write 4 opinions about music using all four structures: Creo que..., Me parece que..., Para mí..., En mi opinión... Use vocabulary from previous lessons.
Friday: Write a 6-line dialogue where two people discuss music preferences. Include agreement, disagreement, and at least 2 gustar-type verbs.
Weekend: Ask a Spanish speaker (or an AI language partner) "¿Qué música le gusta?" and practice responding with your own preferences and opinions. Use the structures from this lesson.
