The year was 1950-something. On the Caribbean coast, in a small fishing village where the river met the sea, a group gathered under the stars. Women in white polleras — wide, flowing skirts — held lit candles in their right hands. Men in white shirts and straw hats circled around them, not touching, just moving closer, then farther, then closer again. The tambor alegre set the pulse. The gaita wailed a melody that sounded ancient, as if the instrument remembered something the people had forgotten. The circle moved counterclockwise, feet barely lifting from the packed earth. (This is how cumbia was born — in the mixture of three cultures that met on the Colombian coast.)
In this lesson, you will learn to tell stories about the past using the pretérito (past tense). Cumbia's history gives you the perfect narrative context to practice this essential grammar structure.

In cumbia's story:
Which sentence correctly uses the pretérito of 'traer'?
Now let's use the pretérito to tell cumbia's story. Pay attention to the time markers that organize the narrative.
Luego (then), nació un baile.
These words tell the listener WHEN things happened and in what ORDER. They are essential for any past-tense narrative.

You visit a coastal town and meet Doña Rosa, 78, who tells you about cumbia in her youth: "Cuando yo era joven, la cumbia fue diferente. Key pretérito forms: fue (was, from ser), bailamos (we danced), usó (wore/used), hizo (made, irregular from hacer), tocaron (played), sonó (sounded).
Explaining Cumbia to a Friend
Your friend asks: "¿Cómo empezó la cumbia?" You answer using the pretérito: "La cumbia nació en la costa caribe. Notice: every verb is in the pretérito because you are recounting completed historical events.
