You are standing in a salsoteca in Cali. The air is warm and humid, the lights are low, and the floor is sticky from spilled aguardiente. A song by the Fania All-Stars blasts from speakers the size of refrigerators. On the dance floor, a woman in a red dress moves her feet so fast they blur — left-right-left-right-kick-spin — while her upper body stays almost perfectly still, as if her torso and her feet belong to two different people. Her partner matches her speed, adding his own juego de pies without ever colliding with her. The whole room watches, some filming with their phones, others simply nodding in respect. La salsa caleña es más rápida que cualquier otra salsa en el mundo. (Caleña salsa is faster than any other salsa in the world.) The people of Cali will tell you this, and they are not wrong.
In this lesson, you will learn to make comparisons using más...que and menos...que, and to express superlatives with el/la más... Salsa gives you the perfect context because everything in Cali's salsa culture is about being faster, better, and more intense than the rest.

When you compare two things in Spanish, the structure is clear and consistent:
Pattern: [Subject] + ser/verb + más/menos + adjective + que + [comparison]

Key point: The adjective still agrees with the subject — más rápida (feminine because salsa is feminine), más rápido (masculine if comparing el ritmo).
When something is THE MOST or THE BEST, you use the superlative:
Pattern: [Subject] + ser + el/la/los/las + más + adjective + de + [group]

Note: del = de + el (contraction). Del mundo = of the world. De Colombia = of/from Colombia.

When two things are EQUAL, use tan...como (as...as):
Pattern: [Subject] + ser/verb + tan + adjective + como + [comparison]
For nouns, use tanto/tanta/tantos/tantas...como:

Pero los mejores bailarines del mundo están aquí en Cali — de eso no hay duda." You sign up for a salsa class. The instructor begins: "Bueno, la salsa caleña es más rápida que otros estilos. El paso básico es menos complicado de lo que parece, pero los pies se mueven más rápido que en la bachata. Lo más importante es la clave — sienta el ritmo primero. Un buen bailarín no es necesariamente el más rápido — es el que mejor siente la clave." Grammar analysis: más rápida que (comparative), menos complicado de lo que parece (less complicated than it seems — B1 structure), más rápido que (adverb comparison), lo más importante (the most important thing — neuter superlative), el que mejor siente (the one who best feels — relative clause).
