It is Saturday at midnight in Medellín. A rooftop bar in El Poblado throbs with bass so deep you feel it in your chest before you hear it. On a giant screen, a music video plays — neon lights, fast cars, dancers in synchronized choreography. The DJ drops a track and the crowd explodes. A girl grabs her friend's arm: "¡Esa canción está sonando en todas partes!" (That song is playing everywhere!) A guy films himself mouthing the lyrics for his Instagram story. The beat is simple — boom-ch-boom-ch — but the energy is magnetic. En este momento, millones de colombianos están escuchando reggaetón. (Right now, millions of Colombians are listening to reggaetón.) Not were listening. Not will listen. ARE listening — right now, as you read this.
In this lesson, you will learn the present progressive (estar + gerund) to describe actions happening RIGHT NOW. Reggaetón's live, present-moment energy makes it the perfect context for this structure.
A2-B1 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
To describe what is happening RIGHT NOW, Spanish uses estar (conjugated) + gerund (the -ando/-iendo form):
Forming the gerund:
| Verb Type | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -ar verbs | stem + -ando | bailar → bailando (dancing) |
| -er verbs | stem + -iendo | comer → comiendo (eating) |
| -ir verbs | stem + -iendo | vivir → viviendo (living) |
Conjugate estar, add the gerund:
| Subject | Estar | + Gerund | Full Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | estoy | bailando | Yo estoy bailando reggaetón. |
| usted | está | escuchando | Usted está escuchando una canción nueva. |
| nosotros | estamos | cantando | Nosotros estamos cantando el coro. |
| ellos | están | tocando | Ellos están tocando música urbana. |
Key irregular gerunds:
This distinction is critical. Getting it wrong makes you sound unnatural.
| Situation | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Happening RIGHT NOW | Progressive | Estoy escuchando reggaetón. (I am listening to reggaetón right now.) |
| Habitual action | Simple present | Escucho reggaetón todos los días. (I listen to reggaetón every day.) |
| Current trend | Progressive | El reggaetón está creciendo mucho. (Reggaetón is growing a lot.) |
| Permanent fact | Simple present | Colombia produce mucha música urbana. (Colombia produces a lot of urban music.) |
| Temporary action | Progressive | El DJ está mezclando una canción nueva. (The DJ is mixing a new song.) |
| Scheduled future | Simple present | El concierto empieza a las 9. (The concert starts at 9.) |
Which sentence correctly describes a habitual action?

| el flow (style/attitude) | Ese cantante está mostrando su flow en el escenario. | That singer is showing his flow on stage. |
| el beat (rhythmic base) | El DJ está creando un beat nuevo. | The DJ is creating a new beat. |
| el coro (chorus) | Todo el mundo está cantando el coro. | Everyone is singing the chorus. |

Describing a Concert in Real Time
You are at a reggaetón concert in Medellín. You text your friend in real time: "¡Estoy en el concierto! El artista está cantando su canción nueva. La gente está bailando como loca. El DJ está mezclando un beat increíble. Mi parche y yo estamos pasando un rato genial." Every sentence uses the present progressive because you are describing what is happening RIGHT NOW. If you were telling the story tomorrow, you would switch to the pretérito: "El artista cantó su canción nueva. La gente bailó..."
Estoy en la discoteca. / Estamos en el concierto.
La gente está bailando. / El DJ está tocando.
La música está sonando muy duro. / El coro está sonando por todo el lugar.
Reggaetón brings in Colombian slang. Learning it in sentence patterns helps you recognize it without misusing it.
Understanding Urban Slang at a Party
Your Colombian friend Julián says: "Parce, esta fiesta está muy bacana. El DJ está poniendo unas canciones bravísimas. Mi parche está llegando — vamos a tirar paso toda la noche. ¿Usted está listo para rumbear?" Let's decode: parce (dude/friend — from 'parcero'), bacana (awesome/cool), bravísimas (superlative of 'brava' — amazing), mi parche (my crew/group of friends), tirar paso (to dance), rumbear (to party/go out dancing). Notice: even in slang-heavy speech, the grammar is correct — está llegando (is arriving), está poniendo (is playing/putting on).
| Slang | Meaning | In a Sentence | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| parce / parcero | dude, friend | Parce, ¿usted está escuchando esa canción? | Very informal |
| bacano/a | cool, awesome | La fiesta está muy bacana. | Informal |
| de una | right away, let's go | —¿Vamos a bailar? —¡De una! | Informal |
| nota | cool, great (short for de nota) | Esa canción está nota. | Very informal |
| rumbear | to go out partying | Estamos rumbeando en El Poblado. | Informal |
Read and notice the progressive structures:
En este momento, la música urbana colombiana está dominando las listas mundiales. Artistas como Shakira, Maluma, J Balvin y Karol G están cantando en español e inglés. Los productores colombianos están creando nuevos sonidos que mezclan reggaetón con pop, electrónica y hasta vallenato. Medellín se está convirtiendo en la capital de la música urbana latinoamericana.
Talking About Current Trends
A classmate asks: "¿Qué está pasando con la música colombiana ahora?" You answer: "La música urbana está creciendo mucho. Los artistas colombianos están colaborando con cantantes internacionales. El reggaetón colombiano está mezclando ritmos tradicionales con beats modernos. Es muy interesante." Notice the last sentence uses simple present (es) because it expresses an opinion/state, not an action in progress.
Which sentence correctly uses the present progressive for a current trend?
Daily Actions for This Week
Monday-Tuesday: Write the gerund of 10 verbs: bailar, cantar, escuchar, tocar, comer, vivir, leer, dormir, oír, pedir. Then use each in a sentence with estar.
Wednesday-Thursday: Describe what is happening around you RIGHT NOW in 5 sentences. Estoy estudiando español. Mi gato está durmiendo. La música está sonando en mi teléfono.
Friday: Write the same scene twice: once as a habit (simple present) and once as happening now (progressive). Example: "Bailo salsa los viernes" vs. "Estoy bailando salsa ahora."
Weekend: Listen to a Colombian reggaetón song. While it plays, write 3 sentences about what you hear and feel using the progressive: "Estoy escuchando un beat fuerte. El cantante está cantando el coro. Me está gustando..." — wait, that last one is wrong! Why? Review the stative verb rule.
Me encanta esta canción. / La fiesta está muy buena. (states, not actions)
