You are having coffee with a Colombian colleague and she says: "Yo creo que el proyecto va bien, o sea, no es que vaya perfecto, pero, bueno, digamos que estamos avanzando. Es decir, los resultados no son los que esperabamos, digo, los que el cliente esperaba, pero pues, quiero decir, estamos en buen camino." A B1 learner might think she is confused. But listen again -- every hesitation, every self-correction, every filler word is doing grammatical work. O sea reformulates, digo corrects a specific word, es decir clarifies, bueno buys thinking time, pues fills the pause, and quiero decir signals "let me restate this more precisely." She is not confused. She is fluent. And paradoxically, these so-called imperfections are what make her sound like a native B2+ speaker.
This lesson teaches you the grammar and function of Colombian filler words and self-correction strategies. At B2, speaking perfectly without hesitation markers actually sounds LESS natural than speaking with the right fillers in the right places. You will learn to use these tools to maintain conversational flow, signal that you are still thinking, and correct yourself with precision.
B2 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Reformulation markers let you rephrase what you just said -- not because you made a mistake, but because you want to be clearer or more precise. They are the most B2 of all filler categories.
| Marker | Function | Grammar | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| O sea | "I mean" / "that is to say" -- rephrases | Conjunction; followed by indicative or subjunctive depending on the reformulation | El proyecto va bien, o sea, estamos cumpliendo los plazos. |
| Es decir | "That is" -- more formal reformulation | Same as o sea but higher register | La inflacion bajo, es decir, los precios no subieron tanto. |
| Digamos | "Let's say" -- approximation/hedging | First person plural subjunctive of decir | Es, digamos, una situacion complicada. |
| Osea que | "So that means" -- drawing a conclusion | Followed by indicative (conclusion is presented as fact) | No hay presupuesto? O sea que no podemos contratar a nadie? |
The critical distinction: O sea rephrases THE SAME idea in different words. O sea que draws a CONCLUSION from what was said. Compare:
Reformulating in a Work Presentation
Context: You are presenting quarterly results.
B1 version (flat, no reformulation): "Los ingresos subieron un 12%. Las ventas en Bogota fueron las mas altas."
B2 version (with reformulation markers): "Los ingresos subieron un 12%, es decir, superamos la meta del trimestre. Las ventas en Bogota fueron, digamos, el motor principal del crecimiento, o sea, sin Bogota los numeros habrian sido muy diferentes."
The B2 version communicates the same facts but adds INTERPRETATION through reformulation markers. Es decir clarifies what 12% means in context. Digamos approximates Bogota's role. O sea rephrases the significance. This makes you sound analytical, not just informative.
Self-correction is different from reformulation. Reformulation rephrases the same idea; correction REPLACES a specific word or phrase with a better one.
| Marker | Function | What it corrects | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digo | "I mean" -- quick correction of a specific word | A wrong word you just said | Hable con Pedro, digo, con Pablo, ayer. |
| Quiero decir | "I mean to say" -- more deliberate correction | A phrase that did not express your intent | No es que sea mala idea, quiero decir, tiene merito pero necesita ajustes. |
| Mejor dicho | "Better said" / "rather" -- upgrading your phrasing | Your previous wording (improving precision) | El proyecto avanza bien. Mejor dicho, avanza mejor de lo esperado. |
| Bueno, no... | "Well, no..." -- rejecting what you just said | Your entire previous statement | El resultado fue positivo. Bueno, no, fue mixto. |
Grammar of self-correction: When you use digo or quiero decir, the grammar after the correction marker must be grammatically parallel to what it replaces. If you said a noun, the correction is a noun. If you said a clause, the correction is a clause. This parallelism is what makes self-correction sound natural.
Your colleague asks how the meeting went. You start to say 'mal' but want to soften it. Which marker fits? 'La reunion fue mal. _____, fue dificil pero productiva.'
Hesitation fillers buy you time to think without losing your conversational turn. Every language has them, but Colombian Spanish has a specific set with distinct grammatical functions.
| Filler | Function | Placement | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pues | "Well..." -- thinking pause + light causation | Sentence-initial or clause-initial | Pues, no se que decirle. |
| Bueno | "Well / OK" -- accepting or transitioning | Sentence-initial | Bueno, la verdad es que no estoy seguro. |
| Eh / Este | Pure hesitation (no semantic content) | Anywhere (avoid overuse) | Yo creo que, eh, deberiamos esperar. |
| A ver | "Let's see" -- gathering thoughts | Sentence-initial | A ver, como le explico... |
| Mire / Vea | "Look" -- attention-getting + think time | Sentence-initial (Colombian) | Vea, lo que pasa es que... |
| Pues mire | Combo: "Well, look..." | Sentence-initial (very Colombian) | Pues mire, yo diria que si. |
The grammar of pues: In Colombian Spanish, pues is the most versatile filler. It can be a conjunction (cause: No fui, pues estaba enfermo = I didn't go, since I was sick), a sentence-initial filler (Pues, yo creo que... = Well, I think that...), or a sentence-final confirmation tag (Si, pues. = Yeah, right). Its position determines its function.
Colombian Fillers in Natural Conversation
Context: You ask a Colombian friend for restaurant recommendations.
TEN discourse markers in one natural response. This is how fluent Colombians actually talk.
This is a counterintuitive but essential B2 concept: using fillers correctly makes you sound MORE fluent, not less.
The fluency paradox:
| Speaker type | What you hear | How it sounds |
|---|---|---|
| B1 speaker (no fillers) | Long pauses... then perfect sentences | Robotic, memorized, unnatural |
| B2 speaker (correct fillers) | Bueno, pues, yo diria que... o sea... smooth flow | Natural, thoughtful, Colombian |
| B2 speaker (wrong fillers) | Um... uh... this... um... English fillers in Spanish | Non-native, jarring |
Why fillers signal fluency: Native speakers NEVER speak in perfect, complete sentences without hesitation. Fillers serve four critical functions:
A B1 speaker says 'El proyecto es bueno' with no fillers. A B2 speaker says 'Bueno, pues, el proyecto es, digamos, bastante prometedor, o sea, tiene potencial real.' Which sounds more naturally Colombian?
Bueno, Pues, A ver, or Pues mire -- this signals you are about to speak and buys thinking time.
Use opinion structures from Lesson 1 or argumentation from Lesson 2.
O sea (casual) or es decir (formal) to rephrase for clarity. Digamos to approximate.
A Complete B2 Conversational Turn
Topic: What do you think about the future of work in Colombia?
Filler/marker count: pues mire (attention), digamos (approximation x2), o sea (reformulation), bueno (transition), es decir (formal reformulation), digo (correction), pues (hesitation), mejor dicho (upgrade), quiero decir (reframing). Eleven markers supporting a coherent, nuanced argument. THIS is B2 conversational fluency.
Conversational Flow Drills
Monday: Master o sea. In every Spanish sentence you say or write today, add an o sea reformulation. "Estoy cansado, o sea, no dormi bien." Force it until it becomes natural.
Tuesday: Master self-correction. Deliberately "make mistakes" and correct them: "Hable con Pedro, digo, Pablo." "Fue bueno, mejor dicho, excelente." Practice the correction being smooth, not awkward.
Wednesday: Master pues. Use it in all three positions: initial (Pues, yo creo que...), medial (No fui, pues estaba ocupado), final (Si, pues). Count how many times you use it.
Thursday-Friday: Record a 2-minute monologue about any topic. Listen back and mark every filler/correction marker. Are they functional or empty? Are they varied or repetitive? Aim for 5+ different markers.
Weekend: Have a conversation with a Colombian speaker (or listen to a Colombian podcast). Count their fillers. You will be amazed: fluent speakers use fillers every 5-10 seconds. Match their density and variety.
Congratulations! You have completed the Advanced Conversation & Debate course. You now have the grammatical tools for expressing opinions, debating, understanding humor, embedding cultural references, persuading diplomatically, using proverbs, managing group conversations, and maintaining natural conversational flow in Colombian Spanish.
Digo for quick word correction. Quiero decir for broader reframing. Mejor dicho to upgrade.
Pues, eh, or bueno between clauses when you need to think. No more than one per clause.
