You are in a meeting room on the twelfth floor of a Bogota office tower. The project manager has just proposed cutting the QA testing phase to save time. You think this is a terrible idea, but you cannot say "Eso es una pesima idea" in a Colombian professional setting without damaging the relationship. Instead, you need to persuade -- to steer the conversation toward your position while making the other person feel respected. You say: "Si consideraramos los riesgos, seria mejor que mantuvieramos la fase de pruebas completa." Two subjunctive verbs, a conditional, and zero aggression. That sentence is persuasion at B2 level.
This lesson teaches you the grammar of persuasion in Colombian Spanish. You will master the conditional-subjunctive combinations that soften commands into suggestions, the rhetorical question structures that guide listeners toward your conclusion, and the diplomatic disagreement formulas that Colombian professional culture demands.
B2 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
The most powerful persuasion structure in Spanish combines the conditional (what WOULD happen) with the subjunctive (a hypothetical condition or suggestion). This combination is the grammar of tactful persuasion.
Type 2 conditional (hypothetical present/future):
| If-clause (imperfect subjunctive) | Result clause (conditional) | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Si consideraramos los datos... | ...veriamos que el proyecto es viable. | If we considered the data, we would see the project is viable. |
| Si el equipo tuviera mas tiempo... | ...los resultados serian mejores. | If the team had more time, the results would be better. |
| Si se invirtiera en capacitacion... | ...la productividad aumentaria. | If one invested in training, productivity would increase. |
Persuasive subjunctive triggers:
| Trigger | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Seria mejor que... | conditional + subjunctive | Seria mejor que reconsideraramos el plazo. |
| Seria conveniente que... | conditional + subjunctive | Seria conveniente que hablaramos con el cliente primero. |
| Seria importante que... | conditional + subjunctive | Seria importante que tuvieramos los datos completos. |
| Yo sugeriria que... | conditional + subjunctive | Yo sugeriria que esperaramos hasta el viernes. |
Direct imperatives (Haga esto, Cambie el plan) are too aggressive for persuasion. Colombian Spanish has a spectrum of softened imperatives that range from gentle suggestion to polite recommendation.
The softening spectrum (from most direct to most diplomatic):
| Structure | Level | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haga X. | Direct imperative | Cambie el informe. | Change the report. |
| Deberia + infinitive | Should (conditional) | Deberia cambiar el informe. | You should change the report. |
| Seria bueno + infinitive | It would be good to | Seria bueno cambiar el informe. | It would be good to change the report. |
| Convendria que + subj. | It would be advisable that | Convendria que cambiara el informe. | It would be advisable to change the report. |
| No seria mejor que + subj.? | Wouldn't it be better? | No seria mejor que cambiara el informe? | Wouldn't it be better if you changed the report? |
| Que tal si + indicative? | What if (suggestion) | Que tal si cambiamos el informe? | What if we change the report? |
Colombian professional preference: The bottom three are most valued in Colombian workplaces. Convendria que, rhetorical No seria mejor que, and the collaborative Que tal si all achieve the same goal (getting the report changed) without issuing a direct command.
Redirecting a Project in Medellin
Context: Your client wants to launch next week, but the product is not ready.
Too direct: "No podemos lanzar la proxima semana.
Which is the MOST diplomatically softened way to suggest changing a strategy?
Rhetorical questions do not seek information -- they guide the listener toward a predetermined conclusion. In Colombian Spanish, they are a cornerstone of polite persuasion.
Common rhetorical question patterns:
| Pattern | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| No + conditional + que + subj.? | "Wouldn't it be... if...?" | No seria ideal que todos participaran? |
| No cree usted que...? | "Don't you think that...?" | No cree usted que el plazo es muy corto? |
| Acaso no + indicative? | "Isn't it the case that...?" | Acaso no hemos hecho esto antes con exito? |
| Por que no + indicative? | "Why don't we...?" | Por que no lo intentamos de otra manera? |
| No valdria la pena + infinitive? | "Wouldn't it be worth...?" | No valdria la pena esperar una semana mas? |
The grammar trick: Negative rhetorical questions (No seria...? No cree...?) expect "yes" as the answer. By framing your position as a question, you make the listener feel they are agreeing rather than being persuaded. This is psychologically more effective than direct assertion.
Persuading a Colleague to Reconsider
Context: Your colleague wants to present the quarterly results without context for the losses.
You: "Interesante propuesta. Pero, no cree usted que los inversionistas querrian ver el contexto economico que explico las perdidas? Acaso no seria mas transparente incluir esa informacion? Si incluyeramos un analisis del mercado, no valdria la pena porque los inversionistas confiarian mas en nuestra honestidad?"
Three rhetorical questions in succession, each building toward the same conclusion: include the context. The colleague never feels attacked -- they feel guided toward understanding.
Colombian professional culture has specific formulas for disagreeing without damaging relationships. These combine the grammar from this lesson into ready-to-use structures.
The Colombian Disagreement Toolkit:
| Formula | Grammar | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Entiendo su posicion, pero me permitiria sugerir que... | Conditional permitiria + infinitive sugerir + subjunctive | With superiors |
| Con todo respeto, yo lo veria de otra manera. | Conditional veria | With equals |
| Valoro mucho su perspectiva. Sin embargo, me pregunto si... | Present indicative + conditional question | In meetings |
| Interesante. Y si lo miraramos desde otro angulo? | Imperfect subjunctive miraramos | Redirecting politely |
| Tiene un punto valido. No obstante, seria importante considerar que... | Conditional seria + infinitive | Concede then redirect |
Board Meeting Disagreement
Context: The marketing director proposes a campaign you think will fail.
When disagreeing with a superior in Colombian professional culture, which opening is most appropriate?
"Entiendo su punto...", "Valoro su perspectiva...", "Es cierto que..." -- always begin by showing you have listened.
"Seria conveniente que consideraramos...", "Yo sugeriria que...", "Que tal si miramos..."
"Si analizaramos los datos, veriamos que...", "Si hicieramos X, el resultado seria Y..."
In the structure 'Si analizaramos los datos, veriamos que el proyecto es viable', which verb is imperfect subjunctive and which is conditional?
Persuasion Grammar Drills
Monday-Tuesday: Take 5 direct imperatives (Cambie X, Haga Y, Termine Z) and rewrite each at 3 levels: deberia + infinitive, seria bueno que + subjunctive, and no seria mejor que + subjunctive?
Wednesday: Write a 4-sentence persuasion turn on this topic: "Your company should adopt remote work Fridays." Use all four elements: validation, softened imperative, conditional hypothesis, rhetorical question.
Thursday-Friday: Listen to a Colombian political debate (Blu Radio or Semana). Count how many conditional verbs and rhetorical questions each speaker uses. Notice: the most persuasive speaker usually has the highest count.
Weekend: Practice diplomatic disagreement with a partner. One person makes a strong claim; the other must disagree using ONLY conditional and subjunctive structures -- no direct "no" allowed.
"No seria mejor que...?", "No cree usted que valdria la pena...?" -- let the listener arrive at your conclusion.
