You are reading a travel blog about Cartagena. One sentence says: "Las murallas fueron construidas por los espanoles en el siglo XVI." The walls WERE BUILT by the Spanish. A few lines later: "Hoy, las murallas estan bien conservadas." Today, the walls ARE well-preserved. Same walls. Two different verb constructions. Both grammatically perfect. But they communicate fundamentally different things.
The first sentence tells you about an ACTION that happened -- who built the walls and when. The second tells you about a RESULTING STATE -- what condition the walls are in now. This is the passive voice split in Spanish: ser + past participle for the action, estar + past participle for the result. It is one of the most sophisticated ser/estar distinctions, and it marks the difference between B1 and B2 proficiency.
This lesson tackles three advanced ser/estar topics that confuse even intermediate speakers: the passive voice, professions with nuance, and events. By the end, you will handle constructions that make other learners freeze.
B1-B2 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
When you want to describe an ACTION being done to something (by someone), Spanish uses ser + past participle. This is called the pasiva con ser.
| Structure | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| ser + past participle + por + agent | La carta fue escrita por Garcia Marquez. | The letter was written by Garcia Marquez. |
| ser + past participle (no agent) | El museo fue inaugurado en 1968. | The museum was inaugurated in 1968. |
The past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject:
'La iglesia de San Pedro Claver ___ ___ en el siglo XVII.' (The church was built in the 17th century.)
'La iglesia ___ bien ___ despues de la restauracion.' (The church is well preserved after the restoration.)
This is the critical distinction. Look at the same subject described two ways:
| Passive (ser) -- the action | Resultant (estar) -- the state |
|---|---|
| La puerta fue cerrada por el guardia. (The door was closed by the guard.) | La puerta esta cerrada. (The door is closed.) |
| El informe fue terminado ayer. (The report was finished yesterday.) | El informe esta terminado. (The report is finished/done.) |
| La comida fue preparada por el chef. (The food was prepared by the chef.) | La comida esta preparada. (The food is prepared/ready.) |
| Los documentos fueron firmados por el director. (The documents were signed by the director.) | Los documentos estan firmados. (The documents are signed.) |
At a Construction Site in Barranquilla
Engineer: El edificio fue disenado por una firma de Bogota. (Passive -- the action of designing.) Worker: Si, y ya esta casi terminado. (Resultant -- the current state of completion.) Engineer: Las ventanas fueron instaladas la semana pasada. (Passive -- the action of installing.) Worker: Pero la puerta principal todavia no esta instalada. (Resultant -- the current state: not yet installed.)
Same past participle (terminado, instalado), different verbs, different functions.
'Las luces de Navidad ya ___ ___.' (The Christmas lights are already installed/up.)
'El Museo del Oro ___ ___ por el Banco de la Republica.' (The Gold Museum was founded by the Bank of the Republic.)
You already know that events use ser for location ("La fiesta es en mi casa"). But ser does more than locate events -- it characterizes them entirely.
| Event property | Example |
|---|---|
| Location | La reunion es en la sala 3. |
| Time | La clase es a las dos. |
| Day/Date | El concierto es el sabado. |
| Characterization | La conferencia fue muy interesante. |
| Definition | Esto es una emergencia. |
'La reunion del equipo ___ manana a las diez en la oficina de Chapinero.' How many ser functions are in this sentence?
Planning a Birthday Party
You: La fiesta es el sabado. (Day -- ser) Friend: ¿Donde es? (Location of event -- ser) You: Es en mi apartamento en Chapinero. (Location -- ser) Friend: ¿A que hora es? (Time -- ser) You: Es a las ocho. (Time -- ser) Friend: ¡Va a ser increible! (Characterization -- ser)
Six uses of ser in one conversation about an event. Events are defined, classified, and characterized entirely with ser.
After the party: 'La fiesta ___ genial. Todo el mundo ___ contento.'
Basic rule: professions use ser. But B2 speakers need to handle nuances.
| Sentence | Verb | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Soy profesor. | ser | Defines what I am. |
| Hoy estoy de profesor sustituto. | estar de | I am acting AS a substitute today. |
| Ella es la directora. | ser | Defines her role. |
| Ella esta de directora interina. | estar de | She is serving as interim director. |
The construction estar de + profession means someone is temporarily filling a role without it being their actual profession.
'Mi hermano no es medico, pero esta semana ___ ___ medico voluntario en una clinica rural.' (My brother is not a doctor, but this week he is serving as a volunteer doctor at a rural clinic.)
'Garcia Marquez ___ escritor y ___ de Aracataca.' (Garcia Marquez was a writer and was from Aracataca.)
Describe the Gold Museum: 'El Museo del Oro ___ ___ en 1939 y hoy ___ ___ al publico.' (was founded in 1939 and today is open to the public.)
'Todas las sillas ___ ___ antes de que llegaran los invitados.' (All the chairs were arranged before the guests arrived.)
Choose a famous Colombian landmark (e.g., the walled city of Cartagena, Museo Botero, Plaza de Bolivar).
Fue construido/fundado/inaugurado + when or by whom.
Esta bien conservado/restaurado/abierto + current state.
Before moving on, verify:
Complete the quiz to test your mastery of passive, resultant, events, and professions.
La exposicion es en el museo / El festival es en la plaza.
Read all three aloud and notice how ser and estar serve different functions for the same subject.
