Picture yourself at a networking event in the co-working spaces of El Poblado, Medellin. A Colombian entrepreneur walks up and asks: "Bueno, cuenteme, ¿quien es usted?" Who are you? Every answer you give will use ser. Your name, your nationality, your profession, your personality -- all of it. Ser is the verb of identity. It is how Spanish answers the most fundamental question a human can ask about another human: What are you?
Now imagine you fumble and say "Estoy programador" instead of "Soy programador." Your new acquaintance will pause. The sentence is not just wrong grammatically -- it sounds like you are saying "I am temporarily in the state of being a programmer," as if programming is a medical condition you caught last week. Ser mistakes in identity contexts sound bizarre to native speakers in a way that is hard to overstate.
This lesson gives you a bulletproof system for every situation where ser is the correct choice. By the end, you will never second-guess ser again.

Physical traits that define someone use ser. But watch the trap: if the trait is the RESULT of a change, you might need estar.
Your friend has always been thin. You describe her to someone: 'Mi amiga ___ muy delgada.'
Describing a New Roommate in Chapinero
You: Mi nuevo companero de apartamento es alto, es moreno, y es muy serio. Pero hoy esta muy contento porque consiguio trabajo.
Three defining traits (ser) and one current emotional state (estar). The roommate IS tall, dark-haired, and serious by nature. But TODAY he is happy -- a temporary condition.
You just got a new job. 'Ahora ___ gerente de una empresa en Bogota.'
Someone asks what time it is. '___ la una y media de la tarde.'
At a Language Exchange in La Candelaria
Colombian: ¿De donde es usted? You: Soy de Estados Unidos, pero estoy viviendo en Bogota. Colombian: ¡Que bien! Yo soy de Bucaramanga, pero ya llevo cinco anos aqui.
Origin = ser (where you are FROM). Current location/living situation = estar (where you ARE). The Colombian is FROM Bucaramanga (ser) but is currently IN Bogota (estar implied).
'Mis abuelos ___ de un pueblo pequeno en Boyaca.'
Introducing your colleague: 'Ella ___ mi companera de trabajo y ___ mi mejor amiga tambien.'
Ser combines with de in several important patterns:
