You are lost. Not metaphorically -- literally lost. You stepped off the TransMilenio at the wrong station somewhere in the sprawl of southern Bogota, your phone is dead, and the afternoon drizzle is turning into actual rain. A woman at a tienda sees your face and asks: "¿Esta bien?" Not "¿Es bien?" -- that would be nonsensical. She is asking about your current state, your condition right now, and that is the domain of estar.
You manage to ask: "¿Donde esta la estacion mas cercana?" She points down the street. Location. Estar. Then she adds: "Usted esta empapado. Entre y espere." You are soaked -- a condition. Estar again. She hands you a tinto and says: "Esta caliente, tomelo." The coffee is hot right now -- a current state. Estar once more.
In the span of thirty seconds, estar did three different jobs: it asked where something is, described your physical condition, and characterized the temperature of a drink. This is the verb of the present moment, the verb of what is happening right now. And you need to own it.
B1-B2 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Just as DOCTOR organizes ser, PLACE organizes estar. Every major use of estar maps to one of these five categories.
| Letter | Category | Example |
|---|---|---|
| P | Position / Location | El restaurante esta en la Zona G. |
| L | Looks / Appearance (current) | Estas muy elegante hoy. |
| A | Action in progress (progressive) | Estoy estudiando espanol. |
| C | Condition (physical/health) | Mi mama esta enferma. |
| E | Emotion (current feelings) | Estamos contentos con la noticia. |
This is one of estar's most important jobs. English uses "to be + -ing" (I am eating). Spanish uses estar + gerund (Estoy comiendo). The gerund formation:
| Verb Type | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -ar verbs | Drop -ar, add -ando | hablar → hablando |
| -er verbs | Drop -er, add -iendo | comer → comiendo |
| -ir verbs | Drop -ir, add -iendo | vivir → viviendo |
Irregular gerunds to know:
| Verb | Gerund | Note |
|---|---|---|
| dormir | durmiendo | stem change o → u |
| pedir | pidiendo | stem change e → i |
| leer | leyendo | i → y between vowels |
| ir | yendo | irregular |
| decir | diciendo | stem change e → i |
