You are sitting at a restaurant table in La Macarena, one of Bogota's bohemian neighborhoods. The meal was excellent - bandeja paisa with a fresh limonada de panela. You call the waiter: "Disculpe, ¿me trae la cuenta?" He nods and returns with a small black folder. You open it and see a printed receipt covered in Spanish: Subtotal... IVA... Servicio voluntario... Propina sugerida... Total... There are five different numbers, and you are not sure which one you are supposed to pay. The waiter stands nearby, waiting. You point at the total and ask: "¿Este es el total?" He says: "Sí, señor. ¿Desea incluir el servicio?" Now you need to decide - and you need to understand what you are deciding.
Leer una cuenta colombiana no es dificil - solo requiere saber donde mirar. (Reading a Colombian bill is not hard - you just need to know where to look.) Once you understand the structure, every receipt in the country makes sense.
In this lesson, you will learn how to read restaurant bills, store receipts, and utility bills in Colombia, understand the tax system (IVA), decode the tipping question that every waiter asks, and master the vocabulary of financial documents that you will encounter in daily life.
Every Colombian restaurant bill follows the same structure. Once you see the pattern, you will never be confused again.

The critical moment comes when the waiter asks: "¿Desea incluir el servicio?" (Do you want to include the service charge?) This is the propina voluntaria - a suggested 10% tip that by law must be optional. If you say "Sí, por favor," they add it. If you say "No, gracias," they remove it. There is no judgment either way, though most Colombians include it.

When you buy something at a supermarket or store, you receive a factura or tiquete de compra. These are simpler than restaurant bills but contain vocabulary worth knowing.

If you live in Colombia, you will receive monthly utility bills - facturas de servicios publicos. These can look intimidating but follow a standard format.

Understanding Your First Utility Bill
Your landlord hands you the electricity bill - la factura de energía. You see: Empresa: Enel-Codensa. Estrato: 4. Periodo: Enero 2026. Consumo: 180 kWh. Cargo fijo: $8,500. Valor consumo: $87,300. IVA: $0. Total a pagar: $95,800. Fecha límite de pago: 15 de febrero. Your landlord says: "Esta se puede pagar en Baloto, en el banco, o por PSE." (You can pay this at Baloto, at the bank, or through PSE.) You ask: "¿Cuánto es en total?" She answers: "Noventa y cinco mil ochocientos. Es normal para un apartamento estrato cuatro."
Colombians have multiple options for paying bills - far more than most foreigners expect.
Log into the utility company's website or your bank's portal. Select PSE, choose your bank, log in, and approve the payment. The bill shows "Pago exitoso" (Payment successful).
Walk into any shop displaying the Baloto or Efecty sign. Hand them the bill (physical or show the barcode on your phone). Pay in cash. They stamp the bill and give you a receipt: "Ya quedo pago." (It is now paid.)
Go to the bank's sucursal. Take a number: "Ficha para pago de servicios." When called, hand the bill to the teller. Pay cash or from your account.
For longer stays in Colombia, you will encounter documents beyond basic bills.

Daily Actions for This Week
Monday-Tuesday: Practice reading the sample restaurant bill aloud in Spanish. Say each number, then the total. Focus on: "Son cuarenta y nueve mil quinientos sesenta pesos."
Wednesday-Thursday: Learn the utility bill vocabulary. Write out a mock utility bill using the terms from Section 4. Practice asking: "¿Cuánto debo este mes?" (How much do I owe this month?) and "¿Cuándo es la fecha límite de pago?" (When is the payment deadline?)
Friday: Study the five bill payment methods. Practice the phrase: "¿Dónde puedo pagar los servicios públicos?" (Where can I pay the utility bills?)
Weekend: If possible, find a Colombian restaurant receipt or bill online. Try to read every line using the vocabulary from this lesson. Identify the subtotal, IVA, servicio, and total.
Most Colombian bank apps (Bancolombia, Davivienda, BBVA) let you scan the bill's barcode and pay directly from your account.
Some supermarkets (Éxito, Jumbo) accept utility bill payments at customer service desks. Bring the bill and pay in cash or by card.
