Part 1: Present Tense in Messages

Text messages use present tense for almost everything -- plans, current status, questions. The present tense you learned in Course 2 is your main tool here.

Why do Colombians use present tense for future plans in texts?

In casual Spanish, the present tense often replaces the future tense for near-future plans: 'Salgo a las 5' (I leave at 5) instead of 'Saldré a las 5.' This is normal in all Spanish, but especially common in texting because messages are quick and informal. Context makes the time frame clear.

'¿Nos vemos manana?' -- what is happening grammatically?

'Verse' is a reciprocal reflexive verb: 'ver' (to see) + 'se' (each other). 'Nos vemos' means 'we see each other' = 'see you.' Present tense used for a future plan. This is the standard way to suggest meeting: '¿Nos vemos el sabado?' (Shall we meet Saturday?).

At A1 level, understand them but write full words. Writing 'que' instead of 'q' will never be wrong -- it just looks slightly more formal. As you get comfortable, you can start abbreviating. But reading them is essential: a Colombian friend might text 'q haces?' and you need to know it means '¿Que haces?' (What are you doing?).

What does 'jajaja' mean and why not 'hahaha'?

In Spanish, 'j' is pronounced like English 'h.' So 'jajaja' is the Spanish way to write laughter -- it sounds like 'hahaha' when read in Spanish. 'Hahaha' would look foreign in a Spanish text. More 'ja's = funnier: 'ja' (polite), 'jaja' (amused), 'jajajaja' (genuinely laughing).

'Dale' literally comes from 'darle' (give it). In practice it means 'OK,' 'sure,' 'sounds good,' 'let's do it.' It is informal and extremely common. Colombian: '¿Nos vemos a las 7?' You: 'Dale.' Done. One word, agreement complete. You will hear and read this constantly.

'Listo' as a conversation tool

'Listo' literally means 'ready' but functions as 'OK/done/understood' in Colombian conversation. 'Listo, nos vemos' (OK, see you). 'Listo, ya entendi' (OK, I understand now). On WhatsApp, a standalone 'Listo' confirms you received and understood the message. It is the Colombian 'roger that.'

'Pues' is Colombia's most versatile filler word. It softens statements: 'Pues si' (well, yes). It bridges ideas: 'Pues, vamos a ver' (well, let's see). In Medellin, 'pues' gets attached to everything: '¿Que mas pues?' (What's up?), 'Venga pues' (Come on then). Using 'pues' naturally is a sign of fluency.

1. Answering

Alo -- The standard Colombian phone greeting. Some people say Bueno or Digame but alo is the most common.

2. Identifying yourself

Habla [name] -- "This is [name] speaking." Or: Si, con el/ella if someone asks for you.

3. Asking for someone

¿Se encuentra [name]? -- "Is [name] there?" More formal: ¿Podria hablar con [name]?

Calling a Restaurant to Make a Reservation

Host: Restaurante El Cielo, buenas tardes. You: Buenas tardes. Quiero hacer una reserva, por favor. Host: Claro, ¿para cuando? You: Para el viernes a las 8 de la noche. Somos cuatro personas. Host: Perfecto. ¿A nombre de quien? You: A nombre de [name]. Host: Listo, queda reservado. Viernes, 8pm, cuatro personas. You: Perfecto, muchas gracias. Muy amable. Host: Con mucho gusto. Hasta el viernes.

Present tense throughout: quiero (I want), somos (we are), queda (it remains/is). Phone courtesy mirrors in-person courtesy: greeting, por favor, gracias, muy amable.
