A security guard stands nearby. You need to ask for directions -- and understand the answer. This lesson teaches you to recognize imperative forms, use prepositions of place, and apply estar for location in real navigation conversations.

Part 1: Recognizing Imperatives in Directions

When Colombians give directions, they use imperative (command) forms. You do not need to produce these yet -- just recognize them. At A1 level, understanding what you hear is the priority.

Why do directions use the usted imperative form?

In Bogota, even giving directions to a stranger uses the usted register. 'Siga derecho' is the usted imperative of seguir. The tu form would be 'sigue derecho' -- you might hear this on the coast. As a learner, recognize both but expect usted forms in most of Colombia.

What does 'cuadra' mean and why is it essential?

A cuadra is a city block. Colombians measure distances in blocks, not meters: 'Siga dos cuadras' (go two blocks), 'Esta a tres cuadras' (it's three blocks away). This is the standard unit of urban distance in Colombia. If someone says 'cinco cuadras,' that is about 500 meters.

Derecho has two meanings: 'right' (direction) and 'straight.' In 'siga derecho,' it means 'straight ahead.' For 'turn right,' Colombians say 'voltee a la derecha' (note the 'a la' before derecha). Context always makes the meaning clear.

'Por' implies movement through or along: 'Camine por esta calle' (walk ALONG this street). 'En' implies static location: 'El restaurante esta en esta calle' (the restaurant IS ON this street). Por = motion through. En = fixed position.

What is 'del' in 'al lado del banco'?

'Del' is the mandatory contraction of 'de + el.' Spanish requires this contraction -- you cannot say 'de el.' Similarly, 'a + el' contracts to 'al.' So 'al lado de + el banco' becomes 'al lado del banco.' This contraction only happens with 'el,' never with 'la, los, las.'

Location of physical things uses estar: '¿Donde esta el banco?' (Where is the bank?). Ser + location only works for events: '¿Donde es la fiesta?' (Where is the party being held?). For directions, you will almost always use estar.

How to Ask for Directions in Colombia

1. Get attention with courtesy

Disculpe (Excuse me) or Buenos dias, señor/señora -- Never start without a greeting or polite opener. Walking up and saying "¿Donde esta...?" is too abrupt.

2. Ask your question

¿Usted sabe donde esta [place]? -- "Do you know where [place] is?" This is softer than a direct "¿Donde esta?" because it gives the person the option to say no.

3. Listen for imperatives and landmarks

They will say things like: Siga derecho, voltee a la derecha, esta al lado de...

You: Buenos dias, señora. Disculpe, ¿usted sabe donde esta el Museo Botero? Woman: Claro, siga derecho por esta calle dos cuadras. Despues voltee a la izquierda y camine una cuadra mas. El museo esta al lado de una iglesia grande. You: Entonces, sigo dos cuadras, volteo a la izquierda, y esta al lado de la iglesia, ¿cierto? Woman: Exacto. Esta muy cerca, no se preocupe. You: Muchas gracias, muy amable. Woman: Con gusto.

Grammar at work: estar for location (donde esta, esta al lado de, esta muy cerca), imperatives for directions (siga, voltee, camine), prepositions (por, a la izquierda, al lado de).

Lost Near TransMilenio in Bogota

You: Buenas tardes, disculpe. ¿La estacion de TransMilenio esta cerca de aqui? Guard: Si, esta a tres cuadras. Suba por la carrera septima hacia el norte. La estacion esta enfrente del centro comercial. You: ¿Subo por la carrera septima? Guard: Si, suba tres cuadras y ahi la ve. Esta a mano derecha. You: Perfecto, muchas gracias. Guard: A la orden.

Note: 'A mano derecha' means 'on the right-hand side' -- a common directional phrase. The guard uses usted imperatives (suba) throughout.

Finding a Restaurant in Medellin's El Poblado

You: Buenas noches. ¿Usted sabe donde esta el restaurante Mondongos? Passerby: Ah si, queda en la calle 10 con carrera 43. Baje por esta calle hasta la esquina, cruce la avenida, y esta a dos cuadras a la derecha. No esta lejos. You: ¿Bajo hasta la esquina y cruzo la avenida? Passerby: Eso. Y despues a la derecha, dos cuadritas.

Notice: 'Queda en' is a Colombian way of saying 'it is located at' -- you will hear this alongside 'esta en.' Also, 'cuadritas' (little blocks) is a diminutive that means 'just a couple of short blocks.'
