You are sitting in a cafe in Cartagena and your Colombian friend asks: "¿Que hiciste ayer?" You freeze. You know how to say what you do -- but what you did? That requires the preterite tense, the verb form Colombians use dozens of times per day to talk about completed events. By the end of this lesson, you will conjugate regular and irregular preterites with confidence and start narrating your own past actions.
B1-B2 Language Objectives
The preterite (el preterito indefinido) is the tense you use when an action started and finished at a definite point in the past. Think of it as a camera snapshot -- the action is complete, done, over.
English has one simple past ("I ate"), but Spanish has two: the preterite (completed) and the imperfect (ongoing/habitual -- Lesson 2). For now, focus entirely on completed actions.
When to use the preterite:
The good news: regular preterite endings are extremely consistent. Learn these three sets and you can conjugate thousands of verbs.
| Pronoun | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | -e | hable |
| tu | -aste | hablaste |
| usted/el/ella | -o | hablo |
| nosotros | -amos | hablamos |
| ustedes/ellos/ellas | -aron | hablaron |
| Pronoun | Ending | Comer | Vivir |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | -i | comi | vivi |
| tu | -iste | comiste | viviste |
| usted/el/ella | -io | comio | vivio |
| nosotros | -imos | comimos | vivimos |
| ustedes/ellos/ellas | -ieron | comieron | vivieron |
Pattern Shortcut
Notice that -er and -ir verbs share the SAME preterite endings. That means you only need to memorize two sets of endings, not three. Also, the nosotros form of -ar and -ir verbs is identical to the present tense (hablamos, vivimos). Context tells the listener which tense you mean.
What is the preterite form of 'yo + hablar'?
Complete: 'Ellos ___ (comer) bandeja paisa anoche.'
What is the preterite of 'tu + vivir'?
These are the verbs you will use most often in the past tense. They do not follow regular patterns, but many share a common structure: irregular stem + special endings.
| Pronoun | Ending |
|---|---|
| yo | -e |
| tu | -iste |
| usted/el/ella | -o |
| nosotros | -imos |
| ustedes/ellos/ellas | -ieron |
These look similar to regular -er/-ir endings but notice: no accent marks on yo (-e, not -e with accent) and usted (-o, not -io).
| Verb | Stem | Yo Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| hacer | hic- | hice | I did/made |
| tener | tuv- | tuve | I had |
| estar | estuv- | estuve | I was (location/condition) |
| poder | pud- | pude | I was able to |
| poner | pus- | puse | I put |
| venir | vin- | vine | I came |
| decir | dij- | dije | I said |
| traer | traj- | traje | I brought |
These two verbs share identical preterite forms. Context always makes the meaning clear.
| Pronoun | Form | Ir meaning | Ser meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | fui | I went | I was |
| tu | fuiste | you went | you were |
| usted/el/ella | fue | he/she went | he/she was |
| nosotros | fuimos | we went | we were |
| ustedes/ellos/ellas | fueron | they went | they were |
A Weekend in Villa de Leyva
Camila: ¿Que hiciste el fin de semana? You: Fui a Villa de Leyva con unos amigos. Camila: ¡Que chevere! ¿Y que hicieron alla? You: Caminamos por la plaza, comimos en un restaurante tipico y vimos el desierto. Camila: ¿Fue bonito? You: Si, fue increible. Estuvimos alli dos dias.
Notice: "Fui a Villa de Leyva" = I went (ir). "Fue increible" = It was incredible (ser). Same forms, clear from context.
Complete: 'Yo ___ (hacer) la tarea anoche.'
What is the preterite of 'ellos + decir'?
'Fui al parque' vs. 'Fui profesor' - what is the difference?
Telling Your Host Family About Your Day
Host mom: ¿Como le fue hoy? You: Bien, gracias. Fui a clase de espanol por la manana. Despues almorce con un companero y caminamos por La Candelaria. Compre un sombrero vueltiao y se lo traje a usted. Host mom: ¡Ay, que lindo! ¿Tuvo algun problema? You: No, todo estuvo bien. Pero me perdi un poquito cerca al Chorro de Quevedo. Host mom: Ja, eso le pasa a todo el mundo.
Every verb here is preterite - each action started and finished. The host mom's "¿Como le fue?" is the standard Colombian way to ask "How did it go for you?"
Your host mom asks '¿Como le fue hoy?' What tense is 'fue' and what verb is it from?
Catching Up with a Friend on WhatsApp
Friend: Parcero, ¿por que no viniste a la rumba anoche? You: No pude. Tuve que estudiar para un examen. Friend: ¡Uy, que pereza! Pues, bailamos toda la noche y Juan se cayo. You: Jaja, ¿en serio? ¿Se hizo dano? Friend: No, estuvo bien. Pero todos se rieron mucho.
The preterite narrates a sequence of finished events. "No pude" and "tuve que" are extremely common irregular preterites in everyday speech.
