You arrive in Cali on a Friday night. The salsa is already audible from the taxi. Your Airbnb host opens the door: "¡Ey! ¿Vos sos el que viene de Medellin? Segui, segui." The vos is familiar after Medellin, but something is different - the rhythm, the vocabulary, the way she alternates vos and usted in a pattern that feels slightly different from paisa speech. Two days later you fly east to Villavicencio, the gateway to the Llanos. Your host there greets you: "Buenas tardes. ¿Usted viene de Cali? Siga, ponga sus cosas ahi." Pure usted. The vos has vanished completely.
Colombia's pronoun system does not have three neat zones. It has five or six, with gradients and transitions. Cali's voseo shares DNA with Medellin's but has its own flavor. The Llanos echo Bogota's usted dominance but with a rural directness. Narino, down near Ecuador, has yet another mix. This lesson maps these variations so you can adapt your pronoun choice to any Colombian region.
In this lesson, you will build a complete pronoun decision tree - matching the right pronoun and conjugation to every major region of Colombia.
B1 Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
Cali (Valle del Cauca) is a voseo zone like Medellin, but the social dynamics differ:
Similarities with Medellin:
Differences from Medellin:
| Feature | Medellin | Cali |
|---|---|---|
| Vos/usted mixing | Constant, fluid | Also fluid, but usted may appear slightly more in mixed-age groups |
| Tu usage | Very rare, can sound pretentious | Slightly more common among younger educated speakers |
| Identity attachment | Vos = strong paisa identity marker | Vos = natural but less identity-loaded |
| Imperative style | Veni, deci, mirá | Same forms: veni, deci, mira |
A Night Out in Cali
At a salsa bar in Cali, your new friend says: "¿Vos sabes bailar salsa? Veni, te enseno. No te preocupes, yo te llevo." Her mother, sitting nearby, addresses you: "¿Usted de donde es? ¿Usted vino a aprender salsa?" The daughter uses vos (peer, informal), the mother uses usted (stranger, older generation). But then the mother laughs: "¡Ay, vos bailas mejor que mi hija!" - the switch to vos means she has warmed up to you.
You meet a 50-year-old woman in Cali for the first time. Which pronoun should you start with?
Narino (Pasto and surrounding areas) uses vos, but with some unique features:
| Context | Narino Pronoun | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Between friends | Vos | ¿Vos queres ir al mercado? |
| With elders | Usted | ¿Usted como ha estado, dona Rosa? |
| Some educated speakers | Tu | ¿Tu crees que va a llover? |
| Mixed group | Usted (safe) | ¿Ustedes quieren comer algo? |
The Llanos Orientales (Meta, Casanare, Arauca) and Amazonia follow the Andean usted pattern but with their own character:
Pronoun system:
What makes the Llanos different from Bogota's usted:
| Feature | Bogota | Llanos |
|---|---|---|
| Usted tone | Urban, polished | Direct, no-nonsense |
| Frequency of tu | Some young speakers use it | Less common than in Bogota |
| Overall register | Can be elaborate | Tends to be brief and functional |
| Sumerce variant | Common in Boyaca | Rare in Llanos |
The Boyaca special case: In Boyaca (another Andean department), you may hear sumerce - a contraction of su merced (your mercy), the same root as usted. This is the most respectful pronoun in Colombian Spanish and is conjugated the same as usted.
You are riding a horse in the Llanos with a local guide. He says: '¿Usted ___ montar bien?' (saber). Which form?
A Day in the Llanos
Your guide in Villavicencio explains the day: "Usted se va a levantar temprano. Le voy a preparar un desayuno llanero - carne, arepa, y aguapanela. Despues usted monta a caballo conmigo. Si usted quiere, le enseno a arrear ganado." Every pronoun is usted, every verb is third person (se va, le voy, monta, quiere, le enseno). This is llanero speech - direct, warm, and entirely in usted.
Identify your region:
Quick Reference Table:
| Region | Informal Default | Formal | Absent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caribbean Coast | Tu | Usted | Vos |
| Bogota / Andes | Usted | Usted | Vos (mostly) |
| Medellin / Paisa | Vos / Usted | Usted | Tu (mostly) |
| Cali / Valle | Vos / Usted | Usted | Tu (less absent) |
| Llanos / Amazonia | Usted | Usted | Vos |
You are in Villavicencio at a casual asado. The correct default pronoun with a new acquaintance is:
Let us cement the three conjugation systems side by side with key verbs:
| Verb | Usted | Tu | Vos |
|---|---|---|---|
| ser | es | eres | sos |
| tener | tiene | tienes | tenes |
| poder | puede | puedes | podes |
| querer | quiere | quieres | queres |
| ir | va | vas | vas |
| vivir | vive | vives | vivis |
| decir | dice | dices | decis |
| venir | viene | vienes | venis |
Imperatives side by side:
| Verb | Usted | Tu | Vos |
|---|---|---|---|
| venir | venga | ven | veni |
| decir | diga | di | deci |
| salir | salga | sal | sali |
| hacer | haga | haz | hace |
| sentarse | sientese | sientate | sentate |
You need to say 'come here' to three different people. Match: Bogota elder / Cartagena friend / Medellin friend
Regional Adaptation Drills
Monday-Tuesday: Write the same 3-sentence greeting in three regional styles: Bogota (usted), Cartagena (tu), and Medellin (vos). Change all verbs, pronouns, and object pronouns.
Wednesday-Thursday: Practice the decision tree. Write 5 scenarios (region + person + context) and determine the correct pronoun for each.
Friday: Focus on imperatives. Write 6 commands ("come here," "tell me," "sit down," "do it," "leave," "be careful") in all three pronoun systems.
Weekend: Test yourself: can you switch between usted, tu, and vos conjugations for any verb without pausing? Use flashcards if needed.
Use USTED. It works everywhere, with everyone, in every situation. No Colombian will ever be offended by usted. You can always become less formal, but you cannot easily recover from being too informal.
