This is the capstone lesson of Essential Grammar. Everything you have learned -- subject pronouns, verb conjugation across all three families, irregular verbs, noun gender, adjective agreement, questions, and negation -- comes together here. You will describe daily routines, ask about other people's schedules, and use reflexive verbs to talk about personal actions like waking up, showering, and getting dressed. By the end, you will be able to narrate an entire day in Spanish.
Language Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
When the subject performs an action on themselves (I wake myself up, she showers herself), Spanish uses reflexive verbs. They are marked by -se attached to the infinitive: levantarse, banarse, vestirse.
The reflexive pronoun goes before the conjugated verb:
| Pronoun | Reflexive Pronoun | Example with levantarse |
|---|---|---|
| yo | me | Yo me levanto |
| tu | te | Tu te levantas |
| el / ella / usted | se | Usted se levanta |
| nosotros | nos | Nosotros nos levantamos |
| ellos / ustedes | se | Ellos se levantan |
Key reflexive verbs for daily routine:
| Infinitive | Meaning | Yo Form | Usted Form |
|---|---|---|---|
| levantarse | to get up | me levanto | se levanta |
| banarse | to shower | me bano | se bana |
| vestirse | to get dressed | me visto | se viste |
| cepillarse | to brush (teeth) | me cepillo | se cepilla |
| acostarse | to go to bed | me acuesto | se acuesta |
| despertarse | to wake up | me despierto | se despierta |
Stem-Changing Reflexive Verbs
Some reflexive verbs also have stem changes: vestirse (e→i: me visto, te vistes, se viste), acostarse (o→ue: me acuesto, te acuestas, se acuesta), despertarse (e→ie: me despierto, te despiertas, se despierta). The stem change only happens when the stem is stressed -- NOT in the nosotros form. Nosotros: nos vestimos, nos acostamos, nos despertamos (no stem change).
'Yo ___ a las seis de la manana.' (levantarse)
'Usted ___ antes de desayunar.' (banarse)
'Nosotros ___ a las diez de la noche.' (acostarse)
You need these phrases to anchor your routine to specific times:
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a las + [time] | at [time] | Me levanto a las seis |
| por la manana | in the morning | Estudio por la manana |
| por la tarde | in the afternoon | Trabajo por la tarde |
| por la noche | at night | Como por la noche |
| todos los dias | every day | Camino todos los dias |
| los lunes / martes... | on Mondays / Tuesdays... | Los lunes no trabajo |
| antes de + infinitive | before [doing] | Antes de comer, me lavo las manos |
| despues de + infinitive | after [doing] | Despues de trabajar, descanso |
| primero... luego... despues | first... then... after | Primero me bano, luego me visto |
How do you say 'I eat at noon'?
Marco's Day in Bogota
Everything from this entire course in one paragraph.
Asking About Someone's Routine
You: ¿A que hora se levanta usted? Colleague: Me levanto a las siete. ¿Y usted? You: A las seis. ¿Que hace por la manana? Colleague: Me bano, tomo tinto, y salgo a las ocho. ¿Usted no desayuna? You: Si, siempre como algo. No salgo sin desayunar. Colleague: ¡Muy bien! En Colombia el desayuno es importante.
Questions (¿A que hora...? ¿Que hace...?), negation (no desayuna, no salgo), reflexive verbs, regular verbs, and irregular verbs -- all flowing naturally.
Weekend Routine in Cartagena
Lucia: Los fines de semana no me levanto temprano. Me despierto a las nueve, me bano, y salgo a caminar por la playa. Como ceviche en un restaurante pequeno. Por la tarde, leo o escucho musica. No trabajo los sabados. Los domingos, cocino para mi familia. Nos sentamos juntos y comemos despacio. Es mi parte favorita de la semana.
Weekend vocabulary, negation with reflexive verbs (no me levanto), the nosotros reflexive form (nos sentamos), and a mix of all three verb families.
Start with when you wake up and get ready. Use reflexive verbs + time expressions. Example: "Me levanto a las siete. Me bano y me visto. Tomo cafe y como pan."
Describe your main activities. Use regular verbs + irregular verbs. Example: "Trabajo de nueve a cinco. Hablo con colegas. Como almuerzo al mediodia."
Describe your after-work routine. Example: "Por la noche, hago ejercicio. Como con mi familia. Leo un libro y me acuesto a las diez."
'Los sabados, ella no ___ temprano.' (levantarse)
'Despues de ___, yo como el desayuno.' (banarse)
'¿A que hora ___ ustedes?' (acostarse)

Daily Practice Tasks
Congratulations! You have completed Essential Grammar. You now have the foundational grammar tools to build sentences, ask questions, describe the world around you, and talk about your daily life in Colombian Spanish. Every future course builds on what you learned here.
Include things you do NOT do. Ask about someone else's routine. Example: "No cocino todos los dias. ¿A que hora se acuesta usted?"
